33 A wound H5061 and dishonour H7036 shall he get; H4672 and his reproach H2781 shall not be wiped away. H4229
Lest thou give H5414 thine honour H1935 unto others, H312 and thy years H8141 unto the cruel: H394 Lest strangers H2114 be filled H7646 with thy wealth; H3581 and thy labours H6089 be in the house H1004 of a stranger; H5237 And thou mourn H5098 at the last, H319 when thy flesh H1320 and thy body H7607 are consumed, H3615
Unstable H6349 as water, H4325 thou shalt not excel; H3498 because thou wentest up H5927 to thy father's H1 bed; H4904 then defiledst thou H2490 it: he went up H5927 to my couch. H3326
And she made him sleep H3462 upon her knees; H1290 and she called H7121 for a man, H376 and she caused him to shave off H1548 the seven H7651 locks H4253 of his head; H7218 and she began H2490 to afflict H6031 him, and his strength H3581 went H5493 from him. And she said, H559 The Philistines H6430 be upon thee, Samson. H8123 And he awoke H3364 out of his sleep, H8142 and said, H559 I will go out H3318 as at other times before, H6471 and shake H5287 myself. And he wist H3045 not that the LORD H3068 was departed H5493 from him. But the Philistines H6430 took H270 him, and put out H5365 his eyes, H5869 and brought him down H3381 to Gaza, H5804 and bound H631 him with fetters of brass; H5178 and he did grind H2912 in the prison H631 house. H1004
Because David H1732 did H6213 that which was right H3477 in the eyes H5869 of the LORD, H3068 and turned not aside H5493 from any thing that he commanded H6680 him all the days H3117 of his life, H2416 save only in the matter H1697 of Uriah H223 the Hittite. H2850
Did not Solomon H8010 king H4428 of Israel H3478 sin H2398 by these things? yet among many H7227 nations H1471 was there no king H4428 like him, who was beloved H157 of his God, H430 and God H430 made H5414 him king H4428 over all Israel: H3478 nevertheless even him H1571 did outlandish H5237 women H802 cause to sin. H2398
[[A Psalm H4210 of David, H1732 to bring to remembrance.]] H2142 O LORD, H3068 rebuke H3198 me not in thy wrath: H7110 neither chasten H3256 me in thy hot displeasure. H2534 For thine arrows H2671 stick fast H5181 in me, and thy hand H3027 presseth me sore. H5181 There is no soundness H4974 in my flesh H1320 because H6440 of thine anger; H2195 neither is there any rest H7965 in my bones H6106 because H6440 of my sin. H2403 For mine iniquities H5771 are gone over H5674 mine head: H7218 as an heavy H3515 burden H4853 they are too heavy H3513 for me. My wounds H2250 stink H887 and are corrupt H4743 because H6440 of my foolishness. H200 I am troubled; H5753 I am bowed down H7817 greatly; H3966 I go H1980 mourning H6937 all the day H3117 long. For my loins H3689 are filled H4390 with a loathsome H7033 disease: and there is no soundness H4974 in my flesh. H1320 I am feeble H6313 and sore H3966 broken: H1794 I have roared H7580 by reason of the disquietness H5100 of my heart. H3820
[[To the chief Musician, H5329 A Psalm H4210 of David, H1732 when Nathan H5416 the prophet H5030 came H935 unto him, after he had gone in H935 to Bathsheba.]] H1339 Have mercy H2603 upon me, O God, H430 according to thy lovingkindness: H2617 according unto the multitude H7230 of thy tender mercies H7356 blot out H4229 my transgressions. Commentary on Proverbs 6 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 6
In this chapter we have,
We are here dissuaded from sin very much by arguments borrowed from our secular interests, for it is not only represented as damning in the other world, but as impoverishing in this.
Pro 6:1-5
It is the excellency of the word of God that it teaches us not only divine wisdom for another world, but human prudence for this world, that we may order our affairs with discretion; and this is one good rule, To avoid suretiship, because by it poverty and ruin are often brought into families, which take away that comfort in relations which he had recommended in the foregoing chapter.
But how are we to understand this? We are not to think it is unlawful in any case to become surety, or bail, for another; it may be a piece of justice or charity; he that has friends may see cause in this instance to show himself friendly, and it may be no piece of imprudence. Paul became bound for Onesimus, Philem. 19. We may help a young man into business that we know to be honest and diligent, and gain him credit by passing our word for him, and so do him a great kindness without any detriment to ourselves. But,
Pro 6:6-11
Solomon, in these verses, addresses himself to the sluggard who loves his ease, lives in idleness, minds no business, sticks to nothing, brings nothing to pass, and in a particular manner is careless in the business of religion. Slothfulness is as sure a way to poverty, though not so short a way, as rash suretiship. He speaks here to the sluggard,
