3 They compassed H5437 me about also with words H1697 of hatred; H8135 and fought H3898 against me without a cause. H2600
They that hate H8130 me without a cause H2600 are more H7231 than the hairs H8185 of mine head: H7218 they that would destroy H6789 me, being mine enemies H341 wrongfully, H8267 are mighty: H6105 then I restored H7725 that which I took not away. H1497
For without cause H2600 have they hid H2934 for me their net H7568 in a pit, H7845 which without cause H2600 they have digged H2658 for my soul. H5315
And Jonathan H3083 spake H1696 good H2896 of David H1732 unto Saul H7586 his father, H1 and said H559 unto him, Let not the king H4428 sin H2398 against his servant, H5650 against David; H1732 because he hath not sinned H2398 against thee, and because his works H4639 have been to thee-ward very H3966 good: H2896 For he did put H7760 his life H5315 in his hand, H3709 and slew H5221 the Philistine, H6430 and the LORD H3068 wrought H6213 a great H1419 salvation H8668 for all Israel: H3478 thou sawest H7200 it, and didst rejoice: H8055 wherefore then wilt thou sin H2398 against innocent H5355 blood, H1818 to slay H4191 David H1732 without a cause? H2600
And he said, H559 Wherefore doth my lord H113 thus pursue H7291 after H310 his servant? H5650 for what have I done? H6213 or what evil H7451 is in mine hand? H3027
And Absalom H53 sent H7971 for Ahithophel H302 the Gilonite, H1526 David's H1732 counsellor, H3289 from his city, H5892 even from Giloh, H1542 while he offered H2076 sacrifices. H2077 And the conspiracy H7195 was strong; H533 for the people H5971 increased H7227 continually H1980 with Absalom. H53
And thus said H559 Shimei H8096 when he cursed, H7043 Come out, H3318 come out, H3318 thou bloody H1818 man, H376 and thou man H376 of Belial: H1100 The LORD H3068 hath returned H7725 upon thee all the blood H1818 of the house H1004 of Saul, H7586 in whose stead thou hast reigned; H4427 and the LORD H3068 hath delivered H5414 the kingdom H4410 into the hand H3027 of Absalom H53 thy son: H1121 and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, H7451 because thou art a bloody H1818 man. H376
They have now compassed H5437 us in our steps: H838 they have set H7896 their eyes H5869 bowing down H5186 to the earth; H776
For, lo, they lie in wait H693 for my soul: H5315 the mighty H5794 are gathered H1481 against me; not for my transgression, H6588 nor for my sin, H2403 O LORD. H3068 They run H7323 and prepare H3559 themselves without my fault: H5771 awake H5782 to help H7125 me, and behold. H7200
If G1508 I had G4160 not G1508 done G4160 among G1722 them G846 the works G2041 which G3739 none G3762 other man G243 did, G4160 they had G2192 not G3756 had G2192 sin: G266 but G1161 now G3568 have they G3708 both G2532 seen G3708 and G2532 hated G3404 both G2532 me G1691 and G2532 my G3450 Father. G3962 But G235 this cometh to pass, that G2443 the word G3056 might be fulfilled G4137 that is written G1125 in G1722 their G846 law, G3551 G3754 They hated G3404 me G3165 without a cause. G1432

Commentary on Psalms 109 Matthew Henry Commentary
Psalm 109
Whether David penned this psalm when he was persecuted by Saul, or when his son Absalom rebelled against him, or upon occasion of some other trouble that was given him, is uncertain; and whether the particular enemy he prays against was Saul, or Doeg, or Ahithophel, or some other not mentioned in the story, we cannot determine; but it is certain that in penning it he had an eye to Christ, his sufferings and his persecutors, for that imprecation (v. 8) is applied to Judas, Acts 1:20. The rest of the prayers here against his enemies were the expressions, not of passion, but of the Spirit of prophecy.
In singing this psalm we must comfort ourselves with the believing foresight of the certain destruction of all the enemies of Christ and his church, and the certain salvation of all those that trust in God and keep close to him.
To the chief Musician. A psalm of David.
Psa 109:1-5
It is the unspeakable comfort of all good people that, whoever is against them, God is for them, and to him they may apply as to one that is pleased to concern himself for them. Thus David here.
Psa 109:6-20
David here fastens upon some one particular person that was worse than the rest of his enemies, and the ringleader of them, and in a devout and pious manner, not from a principle of malice and revenge, but in a holy zeal for God and against sin and with an eye to the enemies of Christ, particularly Judas who betrayed him, whose sin was greater than Pilate's that condemned him (Jn. 19:11), he imprecates and predicts his destruction, foresees and pronounces him completely miserable, and such a one as our Saviour calls him, A son of perdition. Calvin speaks of it as a detestable piece of sacrilege, common in his time among Franciscan friars and other monks, that if any one had malice against a neighbour he might hire some of them to curse him every day, which he would do in the words of these verses; and particularly he tells of a lady in France who, being at variance with her own and only son, hired a parcel of friars to curse him in these words. Greater impiety can scarcely be imagined than to vent a devilish passion in the language of sacred writ, to kindle strife with coals snatched from God's altar, and to call for fire from heaven with a tongue set on fire of hell.
Psa 109:21-31
David, having denounced God's wrath against his enemies, here takes God's comforts to himself, but in a very humble manner, and without boasting.
