2 How he sware H7650 unto the LORD, H3068 and vowed H5087 unto the mighty H46 God of Jacob; H3290
But his bow H7198 abode H3427 in strength, H386 and the arms H2220 of his hands H3027 were made strong H6339 by the hands H3027 of the mighty H46 God of Jacob; H3290 (from thence is the shepherd, H7462 the stone H68 of Israel:) H3478
[[A Psalm H4210 of Asaph.]] H623 The mighty H410 God, H430 even the LORD, H3068 hath spoken, H1696 and called H7121 the earth H776 from the rising H4217 of the sun H8121 unto the going down H3996 thereof.
Thy vows H5088 are upon me, O God: H430 I will render H7999 praises H8426 unto thee.
I will go H935 into thy house H1004 with burnt offerings: H5930 I will pay H7999 thee my vows, H5088 Which my lips H8193 have uttered, H6475 and my mouth H6310 hath spoken, H1696 when I was in trouble. H6862
I will pay H7999 my vows H5088 unto the LORD H3068 now in the presence of all his people. H5971 Precious H3368 in the sight H5869 of the LORD H3068 is the death H4194 of his saints. H2623 O LORD, H3068 truly H577 I am thy servant; H5650 I am thy servant, H5650 and the son H1121 of thine handmaid: H519 thou hast loosed H6605 my bonds. H4147 I will offer H2076 to thee the sacrifice H2077 of thanksgiving, H8426 and will call H7121 upon the name H8034 of the LORD. H3068 I will pay H7999 my vows H5088 unto the LORD H3068 now in the presence of all his people, H5971
Until I find out H4672 a place H4725 for the LORD, H3068 an habitation H4908 for the mighty H46 God of Jacob. H3290
Happy H835 is he that hath the God H410 of Jacob H3290 for his help, H5828 whose hope H7664 is in the LORD H3068 his God: H430 Which made H6213 heaven, H8064 and earth, H776 the sea, H3220 and all that therein is: which keepeth H8104 truth H571 for ever: H5769
And I will feed H398 them that oppress H3238 thee with their own flesh; H1320 and they shall be drunken H7937 with their own blood, H1818 as with sweet wine: H6071 and all flesh H1320 shall know H3045 that I the LORD H3068 am thy Saviour H3467 and thy Redeemer, H1350 the mighty One H46 of Jacob. Commentary on Psalms 132 Matthew Henry Commentary
Psalm 132
It is probable that this psalm was penned by Solomon, to be sung at the dedication of the temple which he built according to the charge his father gave him, 1 Chr. 28:2, etc. Having fulfilled his trust, he begs of God to own what he had done.
The former introduces his petition: the latter follows it as an answer to it. In singing this psalm we must have a concern for the gospel church as the temple of God, and a dependence upon Christ as David our King, in whom the mercies of God are sure mercies.
A song of degrees.
Psa 132:1-10
In these verses we have Solomon's address to God for his favour to him and to his government, and his acceptance of his building a house to God's name. Observe,
Psa 132:11-18
These are precious promises, confirmed by an oath, that the heirs of them might have strong consolation, Heb. 6:17, 18. It is all one whether we take them as pleas urged in the prayer or as answers returned to the prayer; believers know how to make use of the promises both ways, with them to speak to God and in them to hear what God the Lord will speak to us. These promises relate to the establishment both in church and state, both to the throne of the house of David and to the testimony of Israel fixed on Mount Zion. The promises concerning Zion's hill are as applicable to the gospel-church as these concerning David's seed are to Christ, and therefore both pleadable by us and very comfortable to us. Here is,
