1 [[To the chief Musician, H5329 A Psalm H4210 of David.]] H1732 In thee, O LORD, H3068 do I put my trust; H2620 let me never H408 H5769 be ashamed: H954 deliver H6403 me in thy righteousness. H6666
O my God, H430 I trust H982 in thee: let me not be ashamed, H954 let not mine enemies H341 triumph H5970 over me.
For G1063 the scripture G1124 saith, G3004 Whosoever G3956 believeth G4100 on G1909 him G846 shall G2617 not G3756 be ashamed. G2617
In thee, O LORD, H3068 do I put my trust: H2620 let me never H408 H5769 be put to confusion. H954 Deliver H5337 me in thy righteousness, H6666 and cause me to escape: H6403 incline H5186 thine ear H241 unto me, and save H3467 me. Be thou my strong H6697 habitation, H4583 whereunto I may continually H8548 resort: H935 thou hast given commandment H6680 to save H3467 me; for thou art my rock H5553 and my fortress. H4686
[[A Psalm H4210 of David.]] H1732 Hear H8085 my prayer, H8605 O LORD, H3068 give ear H238 to my supplications: H8469 in thy faithfulness H530 answer H6030 me, and in thy righteousness. H6666
The LORD H3068 shall judge H1777 the people: H5971 judge H8199 me, O LORD, H3068 according to my righteousness, H6664 and according to mine integrity H8537 that is in me. Oh let the wickedness H7451 of the wicked H7563 come to an end; H1584 but establish H3559 the just: H6662 for the righteous H6662 God H430 trieth H974 the hearts H3826 and reins. H3629
Judge H8199 me, O God, H430 and plead H7378 my cause H7379 against an ungodly H3808 H2623 nation: H1471 O deliver H6403 me from the deceitful H4820 and unjust H5766 man. H376
Quicken H2421 me, O LORD, H3068 for thy name's H8034 sake: for thy righteousness' H6666 sake bring H3318 my soul H5315 out of trouble. H6869 And of thy mercy H2617 cut off H6789 mine enemies, H341 and destroy H6 all them that afflict H6887 my soul: H5315 for I am thy servant. H5650
And kings H4428 shall be thy nursing fathers, H539 and their queens H8282 thy nursing mothers: H3243 they shall bow down H7812 to thee with their face H639 toward the earth, H776 and lick up H3897 the dust H6083 of thy feet; H7272 and thou shalt know H3045 that I am the LORD: H3068 for they shall not be ashamed H954 that wait H6960 for me.
O Lord, H136 according to all thy righteousness, H6666 I beseech thee, let thine anger H639 and thy fury H2534 be turned away H7725 from thy city H5892 Jerusalem, H3389 thy holy H6944 mountain: H2022 because for our sins, H2399 and for the iniquities H5771 of our fathers, H1 Jerusalem H3389 and thy people H5971 are become a reproach H2781 to all that are about H5439 us.

Commentary on Psalms 31 Matthew Henry Commentary
Psalm 31
It is probable that David penned this psalm when he was persecuted by Saul; some passages in it agree particularly to the narrow escapes he had, at Keilah (1 Sa. 23:13), then in the wilderness of Maon, when Saul marched on one side of the hill and he on the other, and, soon after, in the cave in the wilderness of En-gedi; but that it was penned upon any of those occasions we are not told. It is a mixture of prayers, and praises, and professions of confidence in God, all which do well together and are helpful to one another.
To the chief musician. A psalm of David.
Psa 31:1-8
Faith and prayer must go together. He that believes, let his pray-I believe, therefore I have spoken: and he that prays, let him believe, for the prayer of faith is the prevailing prayer. We have both here.
Psa 31:9-18
In the foregoing verses David had appealed to God's righteousness, and pleaded his relation to him and dependence on him; here he appeals to his mercy, and pleads the greatness of his own misery, which made his case the proper object of that mercy. Observe,
Psa 31:19-24
We have three things in these verses:-
In singing this we should animate ourselves and one another to proceed and persevere in our Christian course, whatever threatens us, and whoever frowns upon us.
