9 He maketh wars H4421 to cease H7673 unto the end H7097 of the earth; H776 he breaketh H7665 the bow, H7198 and cutteth H7112 the spear H2595 in sunder; H7112 he burneth H8313 the chariot H5699 in the fire. H784
And he shall judge H8199 among the nations, H1471 and shall rebuke H3198 many H7227 people: H5971 and they shall beat H3807 their swords H2719 into plowshares, H855 and their spears H2595 into pruninghooks: H4211 nation H1471 shall not lift up H5375 sword H2719 against nation, H1471 neither shall they learn H3925 war H4421 any more.
The bows H7198 of the mighty men H1368 are broken, H2844 and they that stumbled H3782 are girded H247 with strength. H2428
And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto Joshua, H3091 Be not afraid H3372 because H6440 of them: for to morrow H4279 about this time H6256 will I deliver them up H5414 all slain H2491 before H6440 Israel: H3478 thou shalt hough H6131 their horses, H5483 and burn H8313 their chariots H4818 with fire. H784
And Joshua H3091 did H6213 unto them as the LORD H3068 bade H559 him: he houghed H6131 their horses, H5483 and burnt H8313 their chariots H4818 with fire. H784
There brake H7665 he the arrows H7565 of the bow, H7198 the shield, H4043 and the sword, H2719 and the battle. H4421 Selah. H5542 Thou art more glorious H215 and excellent H117 than the mountains H2042 of prey. H2964 The stouthearted H47 H3820 are spoiled, H7997 they have slept H5123 their sleep: H8142 and none of the men H582 of might H2428 have found H4672 their hands. H3027 At thy rebuke, H1606 O God H430 of Jacob, H3290 both the chariot H7393 and horse H5483 are cast into a dead sleep. H7290
Violence H2555 shall no more be heard H8085 in thy land, H776 wasting H7701 nor destruction H7667 within thy borders; H1366 but thou shalt call H7121 thy walls H2346 Salvation, H3444 and thy gates H8179 Praise. H8416
And I will smite H5221 thy bow H7198 out of thy left H8040 hand, H3027 and will cause thine arrows H2671 to fall H5307 out of thy right H3225 hand. H3027
And he shall judge H8199 among many H7227 people, H5971 and rebuke H3198 strong H6099 nations H1471 afar off; H7350 and they shall beat H3807 their swords H2719 into plowshares, H855 and their spears H2595 into pruninghooks: H4211 nation H1471 shall not lift up H5375 a sword H2719 against nation, H1471 neither shall they learn H3925 war H4421 any more. But they shall sit H3427 every man H376 under his vine H1612 and under his fig tree; H8384 and none shall make them afraid: H2729 for the mouth H6310 of the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 hath spoken H1696 it.
And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 that I will cut off H3772 thy horses H5483 out of the midst H7130 of thee, and I will destroy H6 thy chariots: H4818
And they that dwell H3427 in the cities H5892 of Israel H3478 shall go forth, H3318 and shall set H1197 on fire H784 and burn H5400 the weapons, H5402 both the shields H4043 and the bucklers, H6793 the bows H7198 and the arrows, H2671 and the handstaves, H3027 H4731 and the spears, H7420 and they shall burn H1197 them with fire H784 seven H7651 years: H8141 So that they shall take H5375 no wood H6086 out of the field, H7704 neither cut down H2404 any out of the forests; H3293 for they shall burn H1197 the weapons H5402 with fire: H784 and they shall spoil H7997 those that spoiled H7997 them, and rob H962 those that robbed H962 them, saith H5002 the Lord H136 GOD. Commentary on Psalms 46 Matthew Henry Commentary
Psalm 46
This psalm encourages us to hope and trust in God, and his power, and providence, and gracious presence with his church in the worst of times, and directs us to give him the glory of what he has done for us and what he will do: probably it was penned upon occasion of David's victories over the neighbouring nations (2 Sa. 8), and the rest which God gave him from all his enemies round about. We are here taught,
We may, in singing it, apply it either to our spiritual enemies, and be more than conquerors over them, or to the public enemies of Christ's kingdom in the world and their threatening insults, endeavouring to preserve a holy security and serenity of mind when they seem most formidable. It is said of Luther that, when he heard any discouraging news, he would say, Come let us sing the forty-sixth psalm.
To the chief musician for the sons of Korah. A song upon Alamoth.
Psa 46:1-5
The psalmist here teaches us by his own example.
Observe here,
Psa 46:6-11
These verses give glory to God both as King of nations and as King of saints.
