9 That he should still live H2421 for ever, H5331 and not see H7200 corruption. H7845
What man H1397 is he that liveth, H2421 and shall not see H7200 death? H4194 shall he deliver H4422 his soul H5315 from the hand H3027 of the grave? H7585 Selah. H5542
Treasures H214 of wickedness H7562 profit H3276 nothing: but righteousness H6666 delivereth H5337 from death. H4194
Riches H1952 profit H3276 not in the day H3117 of wrath: H5678 but righteousness H6666 delivereth H5337 from death. H4194
There is no man H120 that hath power H7989 over the spirit H7307 to retain H3607 the spirit; H7307 neither hath he power H7983 in the day H3117 of death: H4194 and there is no discharge H4917 in that war; H4421 neither shall wickedness H7562 deliver H4422 those that are given H1167 to it.
Your fathers, H1 where are they? and the prophets, H5030 do they live H2421 for ever? H5769
And G1161 it came to pass, G1096 that the beggar G4434 died, G599 and G2532 was carried G667 by G5259 the angels G32 into G1519 Abraham's G11 bosom: G2859 the rich man G4145 also G1161 G2532 died, G599 and G2532 was buried; G2290 And G2532 in G1722 hell G86 he lift up G1869 his G846 eyes, G3788 being G5225 in G1722 torments, G931 and seeth G3708 Abraham G11 afar G3113 off, G575 and G2532 Lazarus G2976 in G1722 his G846 bosom. G2859
Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 If G1437 a man G5100 keep G5083 my G1699 saying, G3056 he shall G2334 never G3364 G1519 G165 see G2334 death. G2288 Then G3767 said G2036 the Jews G2453 unto him, G846 Now G3568 we know G1097 that G3754 thou hast G2192 a devil. G1140 Abraham G11 is dead, G599 and G2532 the prophets; G4396 and G2532 thou G4771 sayest, G3004 If G1437 a man G5100 keep G5083 my G3450 saying, G3056 he shall G1089 never G3364 G1519 G165 taste G1089 of death. G2288
Because G3754 thou wilt G1459 not G3756 leave G1459 my G3450 soul G5590 in G1519 hell, G86 neither G3761 wilt thou suffer G1325 thine G4675 Holy One G3741 to see G1492 corruption. G1312
He seeing this before G4275 spake G2980 of G4012 the resurrection G386 of Christ, G5547 that G3754 his G846 soul G5590 was G2641 not G3756 left G2641 in G1519 hell, G86 neither G3761 his G846 flesh G4561 did see G1492 corruption. G1312
God G2316 hath fulfilled G1603 the same G5026 unto us G2254 their G846 children, G5043 in that he hath raised up G450 Jesus G2424 again; G450 as G5613 it is G1125 also G2532 written G1125 in G1722 the second G1208 psalm, G5568 Thou G4771 art G1488 my G3450 Son, G5207 this day G4594 have I G1473 begotten G1080 thee. G4571
Wherefore G1352 he saith G3004 also G2532 in G1722 another G2087 psalm, Thou shalt G1325 not G3756 suffer G1325 thine G4675 Holy One G3741 to see G1492 corruption. G1312 For G1063 G3303 David, G1138 after he had served G5256 his own G2398 generation G1074 by the will G1012 of God, G2316 fell on sleep, G2837 and G2532 was laid G4369 unto G4314 his G846 fathers, G3962 and G2532 saw G1492 corruption: G1312 But G1161 he, whom G3739 God G2316 raised again, G1453 saw G1492 no G3756 corruption. Commentary on Psalms 49 Matthew Henry Commentary
Psalm 49
This psalm is a sermon, and so is the next. In most of the psalms we have the penman praying or praising; in these we have him preaching; and it is our duty, in singing psalms, to teach and admonish ourselves and one another. The scope and design of this discourse is to convince the men of this world of their sin and folly in setting their hearts upon the things of this world, and so to persuade them to seek the things of a better world; as also to comfort the people of God, in reference to their own troubles and the grief that arises from the prosperity of the wicked.
In singing this psalm let us receive these instructions, and be wise.
To the chief musician. A psalm for the sons of Korah.
Psa 49:1-5
This is the psalmist's preface to his discourse concerning the vanity of the world and its insufficiency to make us happy; and we seldom meet with an introduction more solemn than this is; for there is no truth of more undoubted certainty, nor of greater weight and importance, and the consideration of which will be of more advantage to us.
