1 And G2532 there appeared G3700 a great G3173 wonder G4592 in G1722 heaven; G3772 a woman G1135 clothed G4016 with the sun, G2246 and G2532 the moon G4582 under G5270 her G846 feet, G4228 and G2532 upon G1909 her G846 head G2776 a crown G4735 of twelve G1427 stars: G792
And G2532 there appeared G3700 another G243 wonder G4592 in G1722 heaven; G3772 and G2532 behold G2400 a great G3173 red G4450 dragon, G1404 having G2192 seven G2033 heads G2776 and G2532 ten G1176 horns, G2768 and G2532 seven G2033 crowns G1238 upon G1909 his G846 heads. G2776
And G2532 the temple G3485 of God G2316 was opened G455 in G1722 heaven, G3772 and G2532 there was seen G3700 in G1722 his G846 temple G3485 the ark G2787 of his G846 testament: G1242 and G2532 there were G1096 lightnings, G796 and G2532 voices, G5456 and G2532 thunderings, G1027 and G2532 an earthquake, G4578 and G2532 great G3173 hail. G5464
But Zion H6726 said, H559 The LORD H3068 hath forsaken H5800 me, and my Lord H136 hath forgotten H7911 me. Can a woman H802 forget H7911 her sucking child, H5764 that she should not have compassion H7355 on the son H1121 of her womb? H990 yea, they may forget, H7911 yet will I not forget H7911 thee. Behold, I have graven H2710 thee upon the palms of my hands; H3709 thy walls H2346 are continually H8548 before me. Thy children H1121 shall make haste; H4116 thy destroyers H2040 and they that made thee waste H2717 shall go forth H3318 of thee. Lift up H5375 thine eyes H5869 round about, H5439 and behold: H7200 all these gather themselves together, H6908 and come H935 to thee. As I live, H2416 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 thou shalt surely clothe H3847 thee with them all, as with an ornament, H5716 and bind H7194 them on thee, as a bride H3618 doeth. For thy waste H2723 and thy desolate places, H8074 and the land H776 of thy destruction, H2035 shall even now be too narrow H3334 by reason of the inhabitants, H3427 and they that swallowed thee up H1104 shall be far away. H7368 The children H1121 which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost H7923 the other, shall say H559 again in thine ears, H241 The place H4725 is too strait H6862 for me: give H5066 place H4725 to me that I may dwell. H3427 Then shalt thou say H559 in thine heart, H3824 Who hath begotten H3205 me these, seeing I have lost my children, H7921 and am desolate, H1565 a captive, H1540 and removing to and fro? H5493 and who hath brought up H1431 these? Behold, I was left H7604 alone; these, where H375 had they been? Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD, H3069 Behold, I will lift up H5375 mine hand H3027 to the Gentiles, H1471 and set up H7311 my standard H5251 to the people: H5971 and they shall bring H935 thy sons H1121 in their arms, H2684 and thy daughters H1323 shall be carried H5375 upon their shoulders. H3802 And kings H4428 shall be thy nursing fathers, H539 and their queens H8282 thy nursing mothers: H3243 they shall bow down H7812 to thee with their face H639 toward the earth, H776 and lick up H3897 the dust H6083 of thy feet; H7272 and thou shalt know H3045 that I am the LORD: H3068 for they shall not be ashamed H954 that wait H6960 for me.
Who is she that looketh forth H8259 as the morning, H7837 fair H3303 as the moon, H3842 clear H1249 as the sun, H2535 and terrible H366 as an army with banners? H1713
For thy Maker H6213 is thine husband; H1166 the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 is his name; H8034 and thy Redeemer H1350 the Holy One H6918 of Israel; H3478 The God H430 of the whole earth H776 shall he be called. H7121 For the LORD H3068 hath called H7121 thee as a woman H802 forsaken H5800 and grieved H6087 in spirit, H7307 and a wife H802 of youth, H5271 when thou wast refused, H3988 saith H559 thy God. H430 For a small H6996 moment H7281 have I forsaken H5800 thee; but with great H1419 mercies H7356 will I gather H6908 thee.
Arise, H6965 shine; H215 for thy light H216 is come, H935 and the glory H3519 of the LORD H3068 is risen H2224 upon thee. For, behold, the darkness H2822 shall cover H3680 the earth, H776 and gross darkness H6205 the people: H3816 but the LORD H3068 shall arise H2224 upon thee, and his glory H3519 shall be seen H7200 upon thee. And the Gentiles H1471 shall come H1980 to thy light, H216 and kings H4428 to the brightness H5051 of thy rising. H2225 Lift up H5375 thine eyes H5869 round about, H5439 and see: H7200 all they gather themselves together, H6908 they come H935 to thee: thy sons H1121 shall come H935 from far, H7350 and thy daughters H1323 shall be nursed H539 at thy side. H6654
The sun H8121 shall be no more thy light H216 by day; H3119 neither for brightness H5051 shall the moon H3394 give light H216 unto thee: but the LORD H3068 shall be unto thee an everlasting H5769 light, H215 and thy God H430 thy glory. H8597 Thy sun H8121 shall no more go down; H935 neither shall thy moon H3391 withdraw H622 itself: for the LORD H3068 shall be thine everlasting H5769 light, H216 and the days H3117 of thy mourning H60 shall be ended. H7999
But unto you that fear H3373 my name H8034 shall the Sun H8121 of righteousness H6666 arise H2224 with healing H4832 in his wings; H3671 and ye shall go forth, H3318 and grow up H6335 as calves H5695 of the stall. H4770
And G2532 then G5119 shall appear G5316 the sign G4592 of the Son G5207 of man G444 in G1722 heaven: G3772 and G2532 then G5119 shall G2875 all G3956 the tribes G5443 of the earth G1093 mourn, G2875 and G2532 they shall see G3700 the Son G5207 of man G444 coming G2064 in G1909 the clouds G3507 of heaven G3772 with G3326 power G1411 and G2532 great G4183 glory. G1391
And G5037 great G3173 earthquakes G4578 shall be G2071 in G2596 divers places, G5117 and G2532 famines, G3042 and G2532 pestilences; G3061 and G5037 fearful sights G5400 and G2532 great G3173 signs G4592 shall there be G2071 from G575 heaven. G3772
This G5124 is G2076 a great G3173 mystery: G3466 but G1161 I G1473 speak G3004 concerning G1519 Christ G5547 and G1519 G2532 the church. G1577
For the LORD H3068 God H430 is a sun H8121 and shield: H4043 the LORD H3068 will give H5414 grace H2580 and glory: H3519 no good H2896 thing will he withhold H4513 from them that walk H1980 uprightly. H8549
Howbeit H3651 in the business of the ambassadors H3887 of the princes H8269 of Babylon, H894 who sent H7971 unto him to enquire H1875 of the wonder H4159 that was done in the land, H776 God H430 left H5800 him, to try H5254 him, that he might know H3045 all that was in his heart. H3824
I will greatly H7797 rejoice H7797 in the LORD, H3068 my soul H5315 shall be joyful H1523 in my God; H430 for he hath clothed H3847 me with the garments H899 of salvation, H3468 he hath covered H3271 me with the robe H4598 of righteousness, H6666 as a bridegroom H2860 decketh H3547 himself with ornaments, H6287 and as a bride H3618 adorneth H5710 herself with her jewels. H3627
Then G5119 certain G5100 of the scribes G1122 and G2532 of the Pharisees G5330 answered, G611 saying, G3004 Master, G1320 we would G2309 see G1492 a sign G4592 from G575 thee. G4675
And I will betroth H781 thee unto me for ever; H5769 yea, I will betroth H781 thee unto me in righteousness, H6664 and in judgment, H4941 and in lovingkindness, H2617 and in mercies. H7356 I will even betroth H781 thee unto me in faithfulness: H530 and thou shalt know H3045 the LORD. H3068
He that hath G2192 the bride G3565 is G2076 the bridegroom: G3566 but G1161 the friend G5384 of the bridegroom, G3566 which G3588 standeth G2476 and G2532 heareth G191 him, G846 rejoiceth G5463 greatly G5479 because G1223 of the bridegroom's G3566 voice: G5456 this G3778 my G1699 joy G5479 therefore G3767 is fulfilled. G4137
For G1063 I am jealous G2206 over you G5209 with godly G2316 jealousy: G2205 for G1063 I have espoused G718 you G5209 to one G1520 husband, G435 that I may present G3936 you as a chaste G53 virgin G3933 to Christ. G5547
For G1063 as many of you as G3745 have been baptized G907 into G1519 Christ G5547 have put on G1746 Christ. G5547
Husbands, G435 love G25 your G1438 wives, G1135 even as G2531 Christ G5547 also G2532 loved G25 the church, G1577 and G2532 gave G3860 himself G1438 for G5228 it; G846 That G2443 he might sanctify G37 and cleanse it G2511 with the washing G3067 of water G5204 by G1722 the word, G4487 That G2443 he might present G3936 it G846 to himself G1438 a glorious G1741 church, G1577 not G3361 having G2192 spot, G4696 or G2228 wrinkle, G4512 or G2228 any G5100 such thing; G5108 but G235 that G2443 it should be G5600 holy G40 and G2532 without blemish. G299
For G1063 the grace G5485 of God G2316 that bringeth salvation G4992 hath appeared G2014 to all G3956 men, G444 Teaching G3811 us G2248 that, G2443 denying G720 ungodliness G763 and G2532 worldly G2886 lusts, G1939 we should live G2198 soberly, G4996 G2532 righteously, G1346 and G2532 godly, G2153 in G1722 this present G3568 world; G165
The mystery G3466 of the seven G2033 stars G792 which G3739 thou sawest G1492 in G1909 my G3450 right hand, G1188 and G2532 the seven G2033 golden G5552 candlesticks. G3087 The seven G2033 stars G792 are G1526 the angels G32 of the seven G2033 churches: G1577 and G2532 the seven G2033 candlesticks G3087 which G3739 thou sawest G1492 are G1526 the seven G2033 churches. Commentary on Revelation 12 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 12
It is generally agreed by the most learned expositors that the narrative we have in this and the two following chapters, from the sounding of the seventh trumpet to the opening of the vials, is not a prediction of things to come, but rather a recapitulation and representation of things past, which, as God would have the apostle to foresee while future, he would have him to review now that they were past, that he might have a more perfect idea of them in his mind, and might observe the agreement between the prophecy and that Providence that is always fulfilling the scriptures. In this chapter we have an account of the contest between the church and antichrist, the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent.
Rev 12:1-11
Here we see that early prophecy eminently fulfilled in which God said he would put enmity between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent, Gen. 3:15. You will observe,
Rev 12:12-17
We have here an account of this war, so happily finished in heaven, or in the church, as it was again renewed and carried on in the wilderness, the place to which the church had fled, and where she had been for some time secured by the special care of her God and Saviour. Observe,
