20 For G1063 the invisible things G517 of him G846 from G575 the creation G2937 of the world G2889 are clearly seen, G2529 being understood G3539 by the things that are made, G4161 even G5037 his G846 eternal G126 power G1411 and G2532 Godhead; G2305 so G1519 that they G846 are G1511 without excuse: G379
[[To the chief Musician, H5329 A Psalm H4210 of David.]] H1732 The heavens H8064 declare H5608 the glory H3519 of God; H410 and the firmament H7549 sheweth his H5046 handywork. H4639 H3027 Day H3117 unto day H3117 uttereth H5042 speech, H562 and night H3915 unto night H3915 sheweth H2331 knowledge. H1847 There is no speech H562 nor language, H1697 where their voice H6963 is not heard. H8085 Their line H6957 is gone out H3318 through all the earth, H776 and their words H4405 to the end H7097 of the world. H8398 In them hath he set H7760 a tabernacle H168 for the sun, H8121 Which is as a bridegroom H2860 coming out H3318 of his chamber, H2646 and rejoiceth H7797 as a strong man H1368 to run H7323 a race. H734 His going forth H4161 is from the end H7097 of the heaven, H8064 and his circuit H8622 unto the ends H7098 of it: and there is nothing hid H5641 from the heat H2535 thereof.
Lift up H5375 your eyes H5869 on high, H4791 and behold H7200 who hath created H1254 these things, that bringeth out H3318 their host H6635 by number: H4557 he calleth H7121 them all by names H8034 by the greatness H7230 of his might, H202 for that he is strong H533 in power; H3581 not one H376 faileth. H5737
Because G1360 that which may be known G1110 of God G2316 is G2076 manifest G5318 in G1722 them; G846 for G1063 God G2316 hath shewed G5319 it unto them. G846
When I consider H7200 thy heavens, H8064 the work H4639 of thy fingers, H676 the moon H3394 and the stars, H3556 which thou hast ordained; H3559
Who laid H3245 the foundations H4349 of the earth, H776 that it should not be removed H4131 for ever. H5769 H5703
By the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 were the heavens H8064 made; H6213 and all the host H6635 of them by the breath H7307 of his mouth. H6310 He gathereth H3664 the waters H4325 of the sea H3220 together as an heap: H5067 he layeth up H5414 the depth H8415 in storehouses. H214 Let all the earth H776 fear H3372 the LORD: H3068 let all the inhabitants H3427 of the world H8398 stand in awe H1481 of him. For he spake, H559 and it was done; he commanded, H6680 and it stood fast. H5975
If G1508 I had G2064 not G1508 come G2064 and G2532 spoken G2980 unto them, G846 they had G2192 not G3756 had G2192 sin: G266 but G1161 now G3568 they have G2192 no G3756 cloke G4392 for G4012 their G846 sin. G266
Who G3739 is G2076 the image G1504 of the invisible G517 God, G2316 the firstborn G4416 of every G3956 creature: G2937
For unto us a child H3206 is born, H3205 unto us a son H1121 is given: H5414 and the government H4951 shall be upon his shoulder: H7926 and his name H8034 shall be called H7121 Wonderful, H6382 Counsellor, H3289 The mighty H1368 God, H410 The everlasting H5703 Father, H1 The Prince H8269 of Peace. H7965
For thou hast possessed H7069 my reins: H3629 thou hast covered H5526 me in my mother's H517 womb. H990
And lest thou lift up H5375 thine eyes H5869 unto heaven, H8064 and when thou seest H7200 the sun, H8121 and the moon, H3394 and the stars, H3556 even all the host H6635 of heaven, H8064 shouldest be driven H5080 to worship H7812 them, and serve H5647 them, which the LORD H3068 thy God H430 hath divided H2505 unto all nations H5971 under the whole heaven. H8064
If I beheld H7200 the sun H216 when it shined, H1984 or the moon H3394 walking H1980 in brightness; H3368 And my heart H3820 hath been secretly H5643 enticed, H6601 or my mouth H6310 hath kissed H5401 my hand: H3027 This also were an iniquity H5771 to be punished by the judge: H6416 for I should have denied H3584 the God H410 that is above. H4605
By faith G4102 he forsook G2641 Egypt, G125 not G3361 fearing G5399 the wrath G2372 of the king: G935 for G1063 he endured, G2594 as G5613 seeing G3708 him who is invisible. G517
How much G4214 more G3123 shall G2511 the blood G129 of Christ, G5547 who G3739 through G1223 the eternal G166 Spirit G4151 offered G4374 himself G1438 without spot G299 to God, G2316 purge G2511 your G5216 conscience G4893 from G575 dead G3498 works G2041 to G1519 serve G3000 the living G2198 God? G2316
Who G3588 only G3441 hath G2192 immortality, G110 dwelling G3611 in the light G5457 which no man G3762 can approach unto; G676 whom G3739 no man G444 hath seen, G1492 nor G3761 can G1410 see: G1492 to whom G3739 be honour G5092 and G2532 power G2904 everlasting. G166 Amen. G281
But G1161 now G3568 is made manifest, G5319 and G5037 by G1223 the scriptures G1124 of the prophets, G4397 according G2596 to the commandment G2003 of the everlasting G166 God, G2316 made known G1107 to G1519 all G3956 nations G1484 for G1519 the obedience G5218 of faith: G4102
Trust H982 ye in the LORD H3068 for ever: H5703 for in the LORD H3050 JEHOVAH H3068 is everlasting H5769 strength: H6697
Fire, H784 and hail; H1259 snow, H7950 and vapour; H7008 stormy H5591 wind H7307 fulfilling H6213 his word: H1697 Mountains, H2022 and all hills; H1389 fruitful H6529 trees, H6086 and all cedars: H730 Beasts, H2416 and all cattle; H929 creeping things, H7431 and flying H3671 fowl: H6833 Kings H4428 of the earth, H776 and all people; H3816 princes, H8269 and all judges H8199 of the earth: H776 Both young men, H970 and maidens; H1330 old men, H2205 and children: H5288
Thy faithfulness H530 is unto all H1755 generations: H1755 thou hast established H3559 the earth, H776 and it abideth. H5975
For G3754 in G1722 him G846 dwelleth G2730 all G3956 the fulness G4138 of the Godhead G2320 bodily. G4985
That G3704 ye may be G1096 the children G5207 of your G5216 Father G3962 which G3588 is in G1722 heaven: G3772 for G3754 he maketh G393 his G846 sun G2246 to rise G393 on G1909 the evil G4190 and G2532 on the good, G18 and G2532 sendeth rain G1026 on G1909 the just G1342 and G2532 on the unjust. Commentary on Romans 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 1
In this chapter we may observe,
Rom 1:1-7
In this paragraph we have,
Rom 1:8-15
We may here observe,
Rom 1:16-18
Paul here enters upon a large discourse of justification, in the latter part of this chapter laying down his thesis, and, in order to the proof of it, describing the deplorable condition of the Gentile world. His transition is very handsome, and like an orator: he was ready to preach the gospel at Rome, though a place where the gospel was run down by those that called themselves the wits; for, saith he, I am not ashamed of it, v. 16. There is a great deal in the gospel which such a man as Paul might be tempted to be ashamed of, especially that he whose gospel it is was a man hanged upon a tree, that the doctrine of it was plain, had little in it to set it off among scholars, the professors of it were mean and despised, and every where spoken against; yet Paul was not ashamed to own it. I reckon him a Christian indeed that is neither ashamed of the gospel nor a shame to it. The reason of this bold profession, taken from the nature and excellency of the gospel, introduces his dissertation.
Rom 1:19-32
In this last part of the chapter the apostle applies what he had said particularly to the Gentile world, in which we may observe,
Now lay all this together, and then say whether the Gentile world, lying under so much guilt and corruption, could be justified before God by any works of their own.
