Romans 2:12 King James Version with Strong's Concordance (STRONG)

12 For G1063 as many as G3745 have sinned G264 without law G460 shall G622 also G2532 perish G622 without law: G460 and G2532 as many as G3745 have sinned G264 in G1722 the law G3551 shall be judged G2919 by G1223 the law; G3551

Cross Reference

Galatians 3:10 STRONG

For G1063 as many as G3745 are G1526 of G1537 the works G2041 of the law G3551 are G1526 under G5259 the curse: G2671 for G1063 it is written, G1125 Cursed G1944 is every one G3956 that G3739 continueth G1696 not G3756 in G1722 all things G3956 which G3588 are written G1125 in G1722 the book G975 of the law G3551 to do G4160 them. G846

Galatians 2:16-19 STRONG

Knowing G1492 that G3754 a man G444 is G1344 not G3756 justified G1344 by G1537 the works G2041 of the law, G3551 but G3362 by G1223 the faith G4102 of Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 even G2532 we G2249 have believed G4100 in G1519 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 that G2443 we might be justified G1344 by G1537 the faith G4102 of Christ, G5547 and G2532 not G3756 by G1537 the works G2041 of the law: G3551 for G1360 by G1537 the works G2041 of the law G3551 shall G1344 no G3756 G3956 flesh G4561 be justified. G1344 But G1161 if, G1487 while we seek G2212 to be justified G1344 by G1722 Christ, G5547 we G2147 ourselves G846 also G2532 are found G2147 sinners, G268 is therefore G687 Christ G5547 the minister G1249 of sin? G266 God forbid. G3361 G1096 For G1063 if G1487 I build G3618 again G3825 the things G5023 which G3739 I destroyed, G2647 I make G4921 myself G1683 a transgressor. G3848 For G1063 I G1473 through G1223 the law G3551 am dead G599 to the law, G3551 that G2443 I might live G2198 unto God. G2316

1 Corinthians 9:21 STRONG

To them that are without law, G459 as G5613 without law, G459 (being G5607 not G3361 without law G459 to God, G2316 but G235 under the law G1772 to Christ,) G5547 that G2443 I might gain G2770 them that are without law. G459

Romans 2:14-16 STRONG

For G1063 when G3752 the Gentiles, G1484 which G3588 have G2192 not G3361 the law, G3551 do G4160 by nature G5449 the things G3588 contained in the law, G3551 these, G3778 having G2192 not G3361 the law, G3551 are G1526 a law G3551 unto themselves: G1438 Which G3748 shew G1731 the work G2041 of the law G3551 written G1123 in G1722 their G846 hearts, G2588 their G846 conscience G4893 also bearing witness, G4828 and G2532 their thoughts G3053 the mean while accusing G2723 or G2228 else G2532 excusing G626 one another;) G3342 G240 In G1722 the day G2250 when G3753 God G2316 shall judge G2919 the secrets G2927 of men G444 by G1223 Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 according G2596 to my G3450 gospel. G2098

Revelation 20:12-15 STRONG

And G2532 I saw G1492 the dead, G3498 small G3398 and G2532 great, G3173 stand G2476 before G1799 God; G2316 and G2532 the books G975 were opened: G455 and G2532 another G243 book G975 was opened, G455 which G3739 is G2076 the book of life: G2222 and G2532 the dead G3498 were judged G2919 out of G1537 those things which were written G1125 in G1722 the books, G975 according to G2596 their G846 works. G2041 And G2532 the sea G2281 gave up G1325 the dead G3498 which G3588 were in G1722 it; G846 and G2532 death G2288 and G2532 hell G86 delivered up G1325 the dead G3498 which G3588 were in G1722 them: G846 and G2532 they were judged G2919 every man G1538 according to G2596 their G846 works. G2041 And G2532 death G2288 and G2532 hell G86 were cast G906 into G1519 the lake G3041 of fire. G4442 This G3778 is G2076 the second G1208 death. G2288 And G2532 whosoever G1536 was G2147 not G3756 found G2147 written G1125 in G1722 the book G976 of life G2222 was cast G906 into G1519 the lake G3041 of fire. G4442

Galatians 3:22 STRONG

But G235 the scripture G1124 hath concluded G4788 all G3956 under G5259 sin, G266 that G2443 the promise G1860 by G1537 faith G4102 of Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 might be given G1325 to them that believe. G4100

2 Corinthians 3:7-9 STRONG

But G1161 if G1487 the ministration G1248 of death, G2288 written G1722 G1121 and engraven G1795 in G1722 stones, G3037 was G1096 glorious, G1722 G1391 so G5620 that the children G5207 of Israel G2474 could G1410 not G3361 stedfastly behold G816 the face G1519 G4383 of Moses G3475 for G1223 the glory G1391 of his G846 countenance; G4383 which G3588 glory was to be done away: G2673 How G4459 shall G1248 not G3780 the ministration G1248 of the spirit G4151 be G2071 rather G3123 G1722 glorious? G1391 For G1063 if G1487 the ministration G1248 of condemnation G2633 be glory, G1391 much G4183 more G3123 doth the ministration G1248 of righteousness G1343 exceed G4052 in G1722 glory. G1391

Romans 8:3 STRONG

For G1063 what the law G3551 could not do, G102 in G1722 that G3739 it was weak G770 through G1223 the flesh, G4561 God G2316 sending G3992 his own G1438 Son G5207 in G1722 the likeness G3667 of sinful G266 flesh, G4561 and G2532 for G4012 sin, G266 condemned G2632 sin G266 in G1722 the flesh: G4561

Romans 7:7-11 STRONG

What G5101 shall we say G2046 then? G3767 Is the law G3551 sin? G266 God forbid. G3361 G1096 Nay, G235 I had G1097 not G3756 known G1097 sin, G266 but G1508 by G1223 the law: G3551 for G1063 G5037 I had G1492 not G3756 known G1492 lust, G1939 except G1508 the law G3551 had said, G3004 Thou shalt G1937 not G3756 covet. G1937 But G1161 sin, G266 taking G2983 occasion G874 by G1223 the commandment, G1785 wrought G2716 in G1722 me G1698 all manner of G3956 concupiscence. G1939 For G1063 without G5565 the law G3551 sin G266 was dead. G3498 For G1161 I G1473 was alive G2198 without G5565 the law G3551 once: G4218 but G1161 when the commandment G1785 came, G2064 sin G266 revived, G326 and G1161 I G1473 died. G599 And G2532 the commandment, G1785 which G3588 was ordained to G1519 life, G2222 I G3427 found G2147 G3778 to be unto G1519 death. G2288 For G1063 sin, G266 taking G2983 occasion G874 by G1223 the commandment, G1785 deceived G1818 me, G3165 and G2532 by G1223 it G846 slew G615 me.

Romans 4:15 STRONG

Because G1063 the law G3551 worketh G2716 wrath: G3709 for G1063 where G3757 no G3756 law G3551 is, G2076 there is no G3761 transgression. G3847

Romans 3:19-20 STRONG

Now G1161 we know G1492 that G3754 what things soever G3745 the law G3551 saith, G3004 it saith G2980 to them who are under G1722 the law: G3551 that G2443 every G3956 mouth G4750 may be stopped, G5420 and G2532 all G3956 the world G2889 may become G1096 guilty G5267 before God. G2316 Therefore G1360 by G1537 the deeds G2041 of the law G3551 there shall G1344 no G3956 G3756 flesh G4561 be justified G1344 in his G846 sight: G1799 for G1063 by G1223 the law G3551 is the knowledge G1922 of sin. G266

Romans 1:32 STRONG

Who G3748 knowing G1921 the judgment G1345 of God, G2316 that G3754 they which commit G4238 such things G5108 are G1526 worthy G514 of death, G2288 not G3756 only G3440 do G4160 the same, G846 but G235 G2532 have pleasure G4909 in them that do G4238 them.

Romans 1:18-21 STRONG

For G1063 the wrath G3709 of God G2316 is revealed G601 from G575 heaven G3772 against G1909 all G3956 ungodliness G763 and G2532 unrighteousness G93 of men, G444 who hold G2722 the truth G225 in G1722 unrighteousness; G93 Because G1360 that which may be known G1110 of God G2316 is G2076 manifest G5318 in G1722 them; G846 for G1063 God G2316 hath shewed G5319 it unto them. G846 For G1063 the invisible things G517 of him G846 from G575 the creation G2937 of the world G2889 are clearly seen, G2529 being understood G3539 by the things that are made, G4161 even G5037 his G846 eternal G126 power G1411 and G2532 Godhead; G2305 so G1519 that they G846 are G1511 without excuse: G379 Because G1360 that, when they knew G1097 God, G2316 they glorified G1392 him not G3756 as G5613 God, G2316 neither G2228 were thankful; G2168 but G235 became vain G3154 in G1722 their G846 imaginations, G1261 and G2532 their G846 foolish G801 heart G2588 was darkened. G4654

Acts 17:30-31 STRONG

And G3303 G3767 the times G5550 of this ignorance G52 God G2316 winked at; G5237 but now G3569 commandeth G3853 all G3956 men G444 every where G3837 to repent: G3340 Because G1360 he hath appointed G2476 a day, G2250 in G1722 the which G3739 he will G3195 judge G2919 the world G3625 in G1722 righteousness G1343 by G1722 that man G435 whom G3739 he hath ordained; G3724 whereof he hath given G3930 assurance G4102 unto all G3956 men, in that he hath raised G450 him G846 from G1537 the dead. G3498

John 19:11 STRONG

Jesus G2424 answered, G611 Thou couldest have G2192 no G3756 power G1849 at all against G3762 G2596 me, G1700 except G1508 it were G2258 given G1325 thee G4671 from above: G509 therefore G5124 G1223 he that delivered G3860 me G3165 unto thee G4671 hath G2192 the greater G3187 sin. G266

Luke 12:47-48 STRONG

And G1161 that G1565 servant, G1401 which G3588 knew G1097 his G1438 lord's G2962 will, G2307 and G2532 prepared G2090 not G3361 himself, neither G3366 did G4160 according G4314 to his G846 will, G2307 shall be beaten G1194 with many G4183 stripes. But G1161 he that knew G1097 not, G3361 and G1161 did commit G4160 things worthy G514 of stripes, G4127 shall be beaten G1194 with few G3641 stripes. For G1161 unto whomsoever G3739 G3956 much G4183 is given, G1325 of G3844 him G846 shall be much G4183 required: G2212 and G2532 to whom men G3739 have committed G3908 much, G4183 of him G846 they will ask G154 the more. G4055

Luke 10:12-15 STRONG

But G1161 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 that G3754 it shall be G2071 more tolerable G414 in G1722 that G1565 day G2250 for Sodom, G4670 than G2228 for that G1565 city. G4172 Woe G3759 unto thee, G4671 Chorazin! G5523 woe G3759 unto thee, G4671 Bethsaida! G966 for G3754 if G1487 the mighty works G1411 had been done G1096 in G1722 Tyre G5184 and G2532 Sidon, G4605 which G3588 have been done G1096 in G1722 you, G5213 they had G3340 a great while ago G3819 repented, G3340 sitting G2521 in G302 G1722 sackcloth G4526 and G2532 ashes. G4700 But G4133 it shall be G2071 more tolerable G414 for Tyre G5184 and G2532 Sidon G4605 at G1722 the judgment, G2920 than G2228 for you. G5213 And G2532 thou, G4771 Capernaum, G2584 which G3588 art exalted G5312 to G2193 heaven, G3772 shalt be thrust down G2601 to G2193 hell. G86

Matthew 11:24 STRONG

But G4133 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 That G3754 it shall be G2071 more tolerable G414 for the land G1093 of Sodom G4670 in G1722 the day G2250 of judgment, G2920 than G2228 for thee. G4671

Matthew 11:22 STRONG

But G4133 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 It shall be G2071 more tolerable G414 for Tyre G5184 and G2532 Sidon G4605 at G1722 the day G2250 of judgment, G2920 than G2228 for you. G5213

Ezekiel 16:49-50 STRONG

Behold, this was the iniquity H5771 of thy sister H269 Sodom, H5467 pride, H1347 fulness H7653 of bread, H3899 and abundance H7962 of idleness H8252 was in her and in her daughters, H1323 neither did she strengthen H2388 the hand H3027 of the poor H6041 and needy. H34 And they were haughty, H1361 and committed H6213 abomination H8441 before H6440 me: therefore I took them away H5493 as I saw H7200 good.

Deuteronomy 27:26 STRONG

Cursed H779 be he that confirmeth H6965 not all the words H1697 of this law H8451 to do H6213 them. And all the people H5971 shall say, H559 Amen. H543

James 2:10 STRONG

For G1063 whosoever G3748 shall keep G5083 the whole G3650 law, G3551 and yet G1161 offend G4417 in G1722 one G1520 point, he is G1096 guilty G1777 of all. G3956

Commentary on Romans 2 Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

CHAPTER 2

Ro 2:1-29. The Jew under Like Condemnation with the Gentile.

From those without, the apostle now turns to those within the pale of revealed religion, the self-righteous Jews, who looked down upon the uncovenanted heathen as beyond the pale of God's mercies, within which they deemed themselves secure, however inconsistent their life may be. Alas! what multitudes wrap themselves up in like fatal confidence, who occupy the corresponding position in the Christian Church!

4. the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance—that is, is designed and adapted to do so.

5. treasurest up unto thyself wrath against—rather "in."

the day of wrath—that is wrath to come on thee in the day of wrath. What an awful idea is here expressed—that the sinner himself is amassing, like hoarded treasure, an ever accumulating stock of divine wrath, to burst upon him in "the day of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God!" And this is said not of the reckless, but of those who boasted of their purity of faith and life.

7-10. To them who, &c.—The substance of these verses is that the final judgment will turn upon character alone.

by patient continuance in well-doing, &c.—Compare Lu 8:15: "That on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience"; denoting the enduring and progressive character of the new life.

8. But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, &c.—referring to such keen and determined resistance to the Gospel as he himself had too painfully witnessed on the part of his own countrymen. (See Ac 13:44-46; 17:5, 13; 18:6, 12; and compare 1Th 2:15, 16).

indignation and wrath—in the bosom of a sin-avenging God.

9. Tribulation and anguish—the effect of these in the sinner himself.

10. to the Jew first—first in perdition if unfaithful; but if obedient to the truth, first in salvation (Ro 2:10).

12. For as many as have sinned—not "as many as have sinned at all," but, "as many as are found in sin" at the judgment of the great day (as the whole context shows).

without law—that is, without the advantage of a positive Revelation.

shall also perish without law—exempt from the charge of rejecting or disregarding it.

and as many as have sinned in the law—within the pale of a positive, written Revelation.

shall be judged by the law—tried and condemned by the higher standard of that written Revelation.

13-15. For not the hearers, &c.—As touching the Jews, in whose ears the written law is continually resounding, the condemnation of as many of them as are found sinners at the last involves no difficulty; but even as respects the heathen, who are strangers to the law in its positive and written form—since they show how deeply it is engraven on their moral nature, which witnesses within them for righteousness and against iniquity, accusing or condemning them according as they violate or obey its stern dictates—their condemnation also for all the sin in which they live and die will carry its dreadful echo in their own breasts.

15. their thoughts the meanwhile accusing or else excusing—that is, perhaps by turns doing both.

16. In the day, &c.—Here the unfinished statement of Ro 2:12 is resumed and closed.

shall judge the secrets of men—here specially referring to the unfathomed depths of hypocrisy in the self-righteous whom the apostle had to deal with. (See Ec 12:14; 1Co 4:5).

according to my gospel—to my teaching as a preacher of the Gospel.

17-24. Behold—"But if" is, beyond doubt, the true reading here. (It differs but in a single letter from the received reading, and the sense is the same).

18. approvest the things that are excellent—"triest the things that differ" (Margin). Both senses are good, and indeed the former is but the result of the latter action. (See on Php 1:10).

20. hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law—not being left, as the heathen are, to vague conjecture on divine things, but favored with definite and precise information from heaven.

22. thou that abhorrest idols—as the Jews did ever after their captivity, though bent on them before.

dost thou commit sacrilege?—not, as some excellent interpreters, "dost thou rob idol temples?" but more generally, as we take it, "dost thou profane holy things?" (as in Mt 21:12, 13, and in other ways).

24. as it is written—(See Isa 52:5, Marginal reference).

25-29. For circumcision—that is, One's being within the covenant of which circumcision was the outward sign and seal.

verily profiteth, if thou keep the law—if the inward reality correspond to the outward sign.

but if, &c.—that is, "Otherwise, thou art no better than the uncircumcised heathen."

26. Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the … law, &c.—Two mistaken interpretations, we think, are given of these words: First, that the case here supposed is an impossible one, and put merely for illustration [Haldane, Chalmers, Hodge]; second that it is the case of the heathen who may and do please God when they act, as has been and is done, up to the light of nature [Grotius, Olshausen, &c.]. The first interpretation is, in our judgment, unnatural; the second, opposed to the apostle's own teaching. But the case here put is, we think, such as that of Cornelius (Ac 10:1-48), who, though outside the external pale of God's covenant, yet having come to the knowledge of the truths contained in it, do manifest the grace of the covenant without the seal of it, and exemplify the character and walk of Abraham's children, though not called by the name of Abraham. Thus, this is but another way of announcing that God was about to show the insufficiency of the mere badge of the Abrahamic covenant, by calling from among the Gentiles a seed of Abraham that had never received the seal of circumcision (see on Ga 5:6); and this interpretation is confirmed by all that follows.

28. he is not a Jew which is one outwardly, &c.—In other words, the name of "Jew" and the rite of "circumcision" were designed but as outward symbols of a separation from the irreligious and ungodly world unto holy devotedness in heart and life to the God of salvation. Where this is realized, the signs are full of significance; but where it is not, they are worse than useless.

Note, (1) It is a sad mark of depravity when all that is designed and fitted to melt only hardens the heart (Ro 2:4, and compare 2Pe 3:9; Ec 8:11). (2) Amidst all the inequalities of religious opportunity measured out to men, and the mysterious bearing of this upon their character and destiny for eternity, the same great principles of judgment, in a form suited to their respective discipline, will be applied to all, and perfect equity will be seen to reign throughout every stage of the divine administration (Ro 2:11-16). (3) "The law written on the heart" (Ro 2:14, 15)—or the Ethics of Natural Theology—may be said to be the one deep foundation on which all revealed religion reposes; and see on Ro 1:19, 20, where we have what we may call its other foundation—the Physics and Metaphysics of Natural Theology. The testimony of these two passages is to the theologian invaluable, while in the breast of every teachable Christian it wakens such deep echoes as are inexpressibly solemn and precious. (4) High religious professions are a fearful aggravation of the inconsistencies of such as make them (Ro 2:17-24). See 2Sa 12:14. (5) As no external privileges, or badge of discipleship, will shield the unholy from the wrath of God, so neither will the want of them shut out from the kingdom of heaven such as have experienced without them that change of heart which the seals of God's covenant were designed to mark. In the sight of the great Searcher of hearts, the Judge of quick and dead, the renovation of the character in heart and life is all in all. In view of this, have not all baptized, sacramented disciples of the Lord Jesus, who "profess that they know God, but in works deny Him," need to tremble—who, under the guise of friends, are "the enemies of the cross of Christ?"
