14 For G1063 when G3752 the Gentiles, G1484 which G3588 have G2192 not G3361 the law, G3551 do G4160 by nature G5449 the things G3588 contained in the law, G3551 these, G3778 having G2192 not G3361 the law, G3551 are G1526 a law G3551 unto themselves: G1438
For G1063 as many as G3745 have sinned G264 without law G460 shall G622 also G2532 perish G622 without law: G460 and G2532 as many as G3745 have sinned G264 in G1722 the law G3551 shall be judged G2919 by G1223 the law; G3551
That G3754 at G1722 that G1565 time G2540 ye were G2258 without G5565 Christ, G5547 being aliens G526 from the commonwealth G4174 of Israel, G2474 and G2532 strangers G3581 from the covenants G1242 of promise, G1860 having G2192 no G3361 hope, G1680 and G2532 without God G112 in G1722 the world: G2889
Who G3739 in G1722 times G1074 past G3944 suffered G1439 all G3956 nations G1484 to walk G4198 in their own G846 ways. G3598
Because G1360 that which may be known G1110 of God G2316 is G2076 manifest G5318 in G1722 them; G846 for G1063 God G2316 hath shewed G5319 it unto them. G846 For G1063 the invisible things G517 of him G846 from G575 the creation G2937 of the world G2889 are clearly seen, G2529 being understood G3539 by the things that are made, G4161 even G5037 his G846 eternal G126 power G1411 and G2532 Godhead; G2305 so G1519 that they G846 are G1511 without excuse: G379
And G2532 shall not G2919 uncircumcision G203 which is by G1537 nature, G5449 if it fulfil G5055 the law, G3551 judge G2919 thee, G4571 who by G1223 the letter G1121 and G2532 circumcision G4061 dost transgress G3848 the law? G3551
What G5101 advantage G4053 then G3767 hath the Jew? G2453 or G2228 what G5101 profit G5622 is there of circumcision? G4061 Much G4183 every G2596 G3956 way: G5158 chiefly, G4412 because G3303 G1063 that G3754 unto them were committed G4100 the oracles G3051 of God. G2316
Finally, G3063 brethren, G80 whatsoever things G3745 are G2076 true, G227 whatsoever things G3745 are honest, G4586 whatsoever things G3745 are just, G1342 whatsoever things G3745 are pure, G53 whatsoever things G3745 are lovely, G4375 whatsoever things G3745 are of good report; G2163 if there be any G1536 virtue, G703 and G2532 if there be any G1536 praise, G1868 think G3049 on these things. Commentary on Romans 2 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 2
The scope of the first two chapters of this epistle may be gathered from ch. 3:9, "We have before proved both Jews and Gentiles that they are all under sin.' This we have proved upon the Gentiles (ch. 1), now in this chapter he proves it upon the Jews, as appears by v. 17, "thou art called a Jew.'
Rom 2:1-16
In the former chapter the apostle had represented the state of the Gentile world to be as bad and black as the Jews were ready enough to pronounce it. And now, designing to show that the state of the Jews was very bad too, and their sin in many respects more aggravated, to prepare his way he sets himself in this part of the chapter to show that God would proceed upon equal terms of justice with Jews and Gentiles; and now with such a partial hand as the Jews were apt to think he would use in their favour.
Rom 2:17-29
In the latter part of the chapter the apostle directs his discourse more closely to the Jews, and shows what sins they were guilty of, notwithstanding their profession and vain pretensions. He had said (v. 13) that not the hearers but the doers of the law are justified; and he here applies that great truth to the Jews. Observe,
