15 Which G3748 shew G1731 the work G2041 of the law G3551 written G1123 in G1722 their G846 hearts, G2588 their G846 conscience G4893 also bearing witness, G4828 and G2532 their thoughts G3053 the mean while accusing G2723 or G2228 else G2532 excusing G626 one another;) G3342 G240
For G1063 the wrath G3709 of God G2316 is revealed G601 from G575 heaven G3772 against G1909 all G3956 ungodliness G763 and G2532 unrighteousness G93 of men, G444 who hold G2722 the truth G225 in G1722 unrighteousness; G93 Because G1360 that which may be known G1110 of God G2316 is G2076 manifest G5318 in G1722 them; G846 for G1063 God G2316 hath shewed G5319 it unto them. G846
Unto the pure G2513 all things G3956 are pure: G3303 G2513 but G1161 unto them that are defiled G3392 and G2532 unbelieving G571 is nothing G3762 pure; G2513 but G235 even G2532 their G846 mind G3563 and G2532 conscience G4893 is defiled. G3392
And G2532 hereby G1722 G5129 we know G1097 that G3754 we are G2070 of G1537 the truth, G225 and G2532 shall assure G3982 our G2257 hearts G2588 before G1715 him. G846 For G3754 if G1437 our G2257 heart G2588 condemn us, G2607 G3754 God G2316 is G2076 greater G3187 than our G2257 heart, G2588 and G2532 knoweth G1097 all things. G3956 Beloved, G27 if G3362 our G2257 heart G2588 condemn G2607 us G2257 not, G3362 then have we G2192 confidence G3954 toward G4314 God. G2316
And they heard H8085 the voice H6963 of the LORD H3068 God H430 walking H1980 in the garden H1588 in the cool H7307 of the day: H3117 and Adam H120 and his wife H802 hid themselves H2244 from the presence H6440 of the LORD H3068 God H430 amongst H8432 the trees H6086 of the garden. H1588 And the LORD H3068 God H430 called H7121 unto Adam, H120 and said H559 unto him, Where art thou? H335 And he said, H559 I heard H8085 thy voice H6963 in the garden, H1588 and I was afraid, H3372 because I H595 was naked; H5903 and I hid myself. H2244 And he said, H559 Who H4310 told H5046 thee that thou wast naked? H5903 Hast thou eaten H398 of the tree, H6086 whereof I commanded thee H6680 that thou shouldest not H1115 eat? H398
Said H559 he not unto me, She H1931 is my sister? H269 and she, H1931 even H1571 she H1931 herself said, H559 He is my brother: H251 in the integrity H8537 of my heart H3824 and innocency H5356 of my hands H3709 have I done H6213 this.
And they said H559 one H376 to another, H251 We are verily H61 guilty H818 concerning our brother, H251 in that H834 we saw H7200 the anguish H6869 of his soul, H5315 when he besought H2603 us, and we would not hear; H8085 therefore is this distress H6869 come H935 upon us. And Reuben H7205 answered H6030 them, saying, H559 Spake I H559 not unto you, saying, H559 Do not sin H2398 against the child; H3206 and ye would not hear? H8085 therefore, behold, also his blood H1818 is required. H1875
The king H4428 said H559 moreover to Shimei, H8096 Thou knowest H3045 all the wickedness H7451 which thine heart H3824 is privy to, H3045 that thou didst H6213 to David H1732 my father: H1 therefore the LORD H3068 shall return H7725 thy wickedness H7451 upon thine own head; H7218
My righteousness H6666 I hold H2388 fast, and will not let it go: H7503 my heart H3824 shall not reproach H2778 me so long as I live. H3117
For oftentimes H6471 H7227 also thine own heart H3820 knoweth H3045 that thou thyself likewise hast cursed H7043 others. H312
And G1161 they which heard G191 it, G2532 being convicted G1651 by G5259 their own conscience, G4893 went out G1831 one by one, G1527 beginning G756 at G575 the eldest, G4245 even unto G2193 the last: G2078 and G2532 Jesus G2424 was left G2641 alone, G3441 and G2532 the woman G1135 standing G2476 in G1722 the midst. G3319
And G1161 Paul, G3972 earnestly beholding G816 the council, G4892 said, G2036 Men G435 and brethren, G80 I G1473 have lived G4176 in all G3956 good G18 conscience G4893 before God G2316 until G891 this G5026 day. G2250
And G1161 herein G1722 G5129 do I exercise G778 myself, G846 to have G2192 always G1275 a conscience G4893 void of offence G677 toward G4314 God, G2316 and G2532 toward men. G444
For G1063 our G2257 rejoicing G2746 is G2076 this, G3778 the testimony G3142 of our G2257 conscience, G4893 that G3754 in G1722 simplicity G572 and G2532 godly G2316 sincerity, G1505 not G3756 with G1722 fleshly G4559 wisdom, G4678 but G235 by G1722 the grace G5485 of God, G2316 we have had our conversation G390 in G1722 the world, G2889 and G1161 more abundantly G4056 to G4314 you-ward. Commentary on Romans 2 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 2
The scope of the first two chapters of this epistle may be gathered from ch. 3:9, "We have before proved both Jews and Gentiles that they are all under sin.' This we have proved upon the Gentiles (ch. 1), now in this chapter he proves it upon the Jews, as appears by v. 17, "thou art called a Jew.'
Rom 2:1-16
In the former chapter the apostle had represented the state of the Gentile world to be as bad and black as the Jews were ready enough to pronounce it. And now, designing to show that the state of the Jews was very bad too, and their sin in many respects more aggravated, to prepare his way he sets himself in this part of the chapter to show that God would proceed upon equal terms of justice with Jews and Gentiles; and now with such a partial hand as the Jews were apt to think he would use in their favour.
Rom 2:17-29
In the latter part of the chapter the apostle directs his discourse more closely to the Jews, and shows what sins they were guilty of, notwithstanding their profession and vain pretensions. He had said (v. 13) that not the hearers but the doers of the law are justified; and he here applies that great truth to the Jews. Observe,
