1 Paul, G3972 a servant G1401 of God, G2316 and G1161 an apostle G652 of Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 according to G2596 the faith G4102 of God's G2316 elect, G1588 and G2532 the acknowledging G1922 of the truth G225 which G3588 is after G2596 godliness; G2150
Paul, G3972 a servant G1401 of Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 called G2822 to be an apostle, G652 separated G873 unto G1519 the gospel G2098 of God, G2316
If any man G1536 teach otherwise, G2085 and G2532 consent G4334 not G3361 to wholesome G5198 words, G3056 even the words of our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 and G2532 to the doctrine G1319 which is according G2596 to godliness; G2150
For G1063 the grace G5485 of God G2316 that bringeth salvation G4992 hath appeared G2014 to all G3956 men, G444 Teaching G3811 us G2248 that, G2443 denying G720 ungodliness G763 and G2532 worldly G2886 lusts, G1939 we should live G2198 soberly, G4996 G2532 righteously, G1346 and G2532 godly, G2153 in G1722 this present G3568 world; G165
Who G3739 will have G2309 all G3956 men G444 to be saved, G4982 and G2532 to come G2064 unto G1519 the knowledge G1922 of the truth. G225
Neither G3366 give heed G4337 to fables G3454 and G2532 endless G562 genealogies, G1076 which G3748 minister G3930 questions, G2214 rather G3123 than G2228 godly G2316 edifying G3620 which G3588 is in G1722 faith: G4102 so do. Now G1161 the end G5056 of the commandment G3852 is G2076 charity G26 out of G1537 a pure G2513 heart, G2588 and G2532 of a good G18 conscience, G4893 and G2532 of faith G4102 unfeigned: G505
And G2532 without controversy G3672 great G3173 is G2076 the mystery G3466 of godliness: G2150 God G2316 was manifest G5319 in G1722 the flesh, G4561 justified G1344 in G1722 the Spirit, G4151 seen G3700 of angels, G32 preached G2784 unto G1722 the Gentiles, G1484 believed on G4100 in G1722 the world, G2889 received up G353 into G1722 glory. G1391
But G1161 we G2249 are bound G3784 to give thanks G2168 alway G3842 to God G2316 for G4012 you, G5216 brethren G80 beloved G25 of G5259 the Lord, G2962 because G3754 God G2316 hath G138 from G575 the beginning G746 chosen G138 you G5209 to G1519 salvation G4991 through G1722 sanctification G38 of the Spirit G4151 and G2532 belief G4102 of the truth: G225 Whereunto G1519 G3739 he called G2564 you G5209 by G1223 our G2257 gospel, G2098 to G1519 the obtaining G4047 of the glory G1391 of our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ. G5547
That G2443 their G846 hearts G2588 might be comforted, G3870 being knit together G4822 in G1722 love, G26 and G2532 unto G1519 all G3956 riches G4149 of the full assurance G4136 of understanding, G4907 to G1519 the acknowledgement G1922 of the mystery G3466 of God, G2316 and G2532 of the Father, G3962 and G2532 of Christ; G5547
Paul G3972 and G2532 Timotheus, G5095 the servants G1401 of Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 to all G3956 the saints G40 in G1722 Christ G5547 Jesus G2424 which are G5607 at G1722 Philippi, G5375 with G4862 the bishops G1985 and G2532 deacons: G1249
For G1063 by grace G5485 are ye G2075 saved G4982 through G1223 faith; G4102 and G2532 that G5124 not G3756 of G1537 yourselves: G5216 it is the gift G1435 of God: G2316
Paul, G3972 an apostle G652 of Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 by G1223 the will G2307 of God, G2316 and G2532 Timothy G5095 our brother, G80 unto the church G1577 of God G2316 which G3588 is G5607 at G1722 Corinth, G2882 with G4862 all G3956 the saints G40 which G3588 are G5607 in G1722 all G3650 Achaia: G882
And G1161 when the Gentiles G1484 heard this, G191 they were glad, G5463 and G2532 glorified G1392 the word G3056 of the Lord: G2962 and G2532 as many as G3745 were G2258 ordained G5021 to G1519 eternal G166 life G2222 believed. G4100
But G235 ye G5210 believe G4100 not, G3756 because G1063 ye are G2075 not G3756 of G1537 my G1699 sheep, G4263 as G2531 I said G2036 unto you. G5213 My G1699 sheep G4263 hear G191 my G3450 voice, G5456 and I G2504 know G1097 them, G846 and G2532 they follow G190 me: G3427
But Aaron H175 and his sons H1121 offered H6999 upon the altar H4196 of the burnt offering, H5930 and on the altar H4196 of incense, H7004 and were appointed for all the work H4399 of the place most H6944 holy, H6944 and to make an atonement H3722 for Israel, H3478 according to all that Moses H4872 the servant H5650 of God H430 had commanded. Commentary on Titus 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 1
In this chapter we have,
Tts 1:1-4
Here is the preface to the epistle, showing,
Thus far is the preface to the epistle; then follows the entrance into the matter, by signifying the end of Titus's being left in Crete.
Tts 1:5
Here is the end expressed,
Tts 1:6-16
The apostle here gives Titus directions about ordination, showing whom he should ordain, and whom not.
Objection. But are not these judaizers (as you call them) men who profess religion, and speak well of God, and Christ, and righteousness of life, and should they be so severely taxed? Answer, They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and to every good work reprobate, v. 16. There are many who in word and tongue profess to know God, and yet in their lives and conversations deny and reject him; their practice is a contradiction to their profession. They come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness, Eze. 33:31. Being abominable, and disobedient, and to every good work reprobate. The apostle, instructing Titus to rebuke sharply, does himself rebuke sharply; he gives them very hard words, yet doubtless no harder than their case warranted and their need required. Being abominable-bdelyktoi, deserving that God and good men should turn away their eyes from them as nauseous and offensive. And disobedient-apeitheis, unpersuadable and unbelieving. They might do divers things; but it was not the obedience of faith, nor what was commanded, or short of the command. To every good work reprobate, without skill or judgment to do any thing aright. See the miserable condition of hypocrites, such as have a form of godliness, but without the power; yet let us not be so ready to fix this charge on others as careful that it agree not to ourselves, that there be not in us an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God; but that we be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ unto the glory and praise of God, Phil. 1:10, 11.
