19 And I said H559 unto the angel H4397 that talked H1696 with me, What be these? And he answered H559 me, These are the horns H7161 which have scattered H2219 Judah, H3063 Israel, H3478 and Jerusalem. H3389
Then said H559 I, What come H935 these to do? H6213 And he spake, H559 saying, H559 These are the horns H7161 which have scattered H2219 Judah, H3063 so that H6310 no man H376 did lift up H5375 his head: H7218 but these are come H935 to fray H2729 them, to cast out H3034 the horns H7161 of the Gentiles, H1471 which lifted up H5375 their horn H7161 over the land H776 of Judah H3063 to scatter H2219 it.
Then the people H5971 of the land H776 weakened H7503 the hands H3027 of the people H5971 of Judah, H3063 and troubled H926 H1089 them in building, H1129
And in the days H3117 of Artaxerxes H783 wrote H3789 Bishlam, H1312 Mithredath, H4990 Tabeel, H2870 and the rest H7605 of their companions, H3674 unto Artaxerxes H783 king H4428 of Persia; H6539 and the writing H3791 of the letter H5406 was written H3789 in the Syrian tongue, H762 and interpreted H8638 in the Syrian tongue. H762
At the same time H2166 came H858 to them Tatnai, H8674 governor H6347 on this side H5675 the river, H5103 and Shetharboznai, H8370 and their companions, H3675 and said H560 thus H3652 unto them, H5922 Who H4479 hath commanded H7761 H2942 you to build H1124 this H1836 house, H1005 and to make up H3635 this H1836 wall? H846
Israel H3478 is a scattered H6340 sheep; H7716 the lions H738 have driven him away: H5080 first H7223 the king H4428 of Assyria H804 hath devoured H398 him; and last H314 this Nebuchadrezzar H5019 king H4428 of Babylon H894 hath broken his bones. H6105 Therefore thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 the God H430 of Israel; H3478 Behold, I will punish H6485 the king H4428 of Babylon H894 and his land, H776 as I have punished H6485 the king H4428 of Assyria. H804
And I heard H8085 the man H376 clothed H3847 in linen, H906 which was upon H4605 the waters H4325 of the river, H2975 when he held up H7311 his right hand H3225 and his left hand H8040 unto heaven, H8064 and sware H7650 by him that liveth H2416 for ever H5769 that it shall be for a time, H4150 times, H4150 and an half; H2677 and when he shall have accomplished H3615 to scatter H5310 the power H3027 of the holy H6944 people, H5971 all these things shall be finished. H3615
Thou didst strike through H5344 with his staves H4294 the head H7218 of his villages: H6518 they came out as a whirlwind H5590 to scatter H6327 me: their rejoicing H5951 was as to devour H398 the poor H6041 secretly. H4565
Then said H559 I, Whither goest H1980 thou? And he said H559 unto me, To measure H4058 Jerusalem, H3389 to see H7200 what H4100 is the breadth H7341 thereof, and what is the length H753 thereof.
Then answered H6030 I, and said H559 unto him, What are these two H8147 olive trees H2132 upon the right H3225 side of the candlestick H4501 and upon the left H8040 side thereof? And I answered H6030 again, H8145 and said H559 unto him, What be these two H8147 olive H2132 branches H7641 which through H3027 the two H8147 golden H2091 pipes H6804 empty H7324 the golden H2091 oil out of themselves? And he answered H559 me and said, H559 Knowest H3045 thou not what these be? And I said, H559 No, my lord. H113 Then said H559 he, These are the two H8147 anointed H3323 ones, H1121 that stand H5975 by the Lord H113 of the whole earth. H776
For thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts; H6635 As I thought H2161 to punish H7489 you, when your fathers H1 provoked me to wrath, H7107 saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 and I repented H5162 not:
And G2532 one G1520 of G1537 the elders G4245 answered, G611 saying G3004 unto me, G3427 What G5101 are G1526 these G3778 which G3588 are arrayed in G4016 white G3022 robes? G4749 and G2532 whence G4159 came they? G2064 And G2532 I said G2046 unto him, G846 Sir, G2962 thou G4771 knowest. G1492 And G2532 he said G2036 to me, G3427 These G3778 are they G1526 which came G2064 out of G1537 great G3173 tribulation, G2347 and G2532 have washed G4150 their G846 robes, G4749 and G2532 made G3021 them G4749 G846 white G3021 in G1722 the blood G129 of the Lamb. Commentary on Zechariah 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The Prophecy of Zechariah
Chapter 1
In this chapter, after the introduction (v. 1), we have,
Zec 1:1-6
Here is,
Zec 1:7-17
We not come to visions and revelations of the Lord; for in that way God chose to speak by Zechariah, to awaken the people's attention, and to engage their humble reverence of the word and their humble enquiries into it, and to fix it the more in their minds and memories. Most of the following visions seem designed for the comfort of the Jews, now newly returned out of captivity, and their encouragement to go on with the building of the temple. The scope of this vision (which is as an introduction to the rest) is to assure the Jews of the care God took of them, and the eye of his providence that was upon them for good, now in their present state, when they seem to be deserted, and their case deplorable. The vision is dated (v. 7) the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, three months after he preached that sermon (v. 1), in which he calls them to repentance from the consideration of God's judgments. Finding that that sermon had a good effect, and that they returned to God in a way of duty, the assurances he had given them are confirmed, that God would return to them in a way of mercy. Now observe here,
Zec 1:18-21
It is the comfort and triumph of the church (Isa. 59:19) that when the enemy shall come in like a flood, with mighty force and fury, then the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. Now, in this vision (the second which this prophet had), we have an illustration of that, God's Spirit making a stand, and making head, against the formidable power of the church's adversaries.
