3 And they say, `If ye are sending away the ark of the God of Israel, ye do not send it away empty; for ye do certainly send back to Him a guilt-offering; then ye are healed, and it hath been known to you why His hand doth not turn aside from you.'
`When a person committeth a trespass, and hath sinned through ignorance against the holy things of Jehovah, then he hath brought in his guilt-offering to Jehovah, a ram, a perfect one, out of the flock, at thy valuation `in' silver -- shekels by the shekel of the sanctuary -- for a guilt-offering. `And that which he hath sinned against the holy thing he repayeth, and its fifth is adding to it, and hath given it to the priest, and the priest maketh atonement for him with the ram of the guilt-offering, and it hath been forgiven him. `And when any person sinneth, and hath done `something against' one of all the commands of Jehovah `regarding things' which are not to be done, and hath not known, and he hath been guilty, and hath borne his iniquity, `Then he hath brought in a ram, a perfect one, out of the flock, at thy valuation, for a guilt-offering, unto the priest; and the priest hath made atonement for him, for his ignorance in which he hath erred and he hath not known, and it hath been forgiven him; it `is' a guilt-offering; he hath been certainly guilty before Jehovah.'
`And this `is' a law of the guilt-offering: it `is' most holy; in the place where they slaughter the burnt-offering they do slaughter the guilt-offering, and its blood `one' doth sprinkle on the altar round about, and all its fat he bringeth near out of it, the fat tail, and the fat which is covering the inwards, and the two kidneys, and the fat which `is' on them, which `is' on the flanks, and the redundance above the liver (beside the kidneys he doth turn it aside); and the priest hath made them a perfume on the altar, a fire-offering to Jehovah; it `is' a guilt-offering. `Every male among the priests doth eat it; in the holy place it is eaten -- it `is' most holy; as `is' a sin-offering, so `is' a guilt-offering; one law `is' for them; the priest who maketh atonement by it -- it is his.

Commentary on 1 Samuel 6 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 6
In this chapter we have the return of the ark to the land of Israel, whither we are now gladly to attend it, and observe,
1Sa 6:1-9
The first words of the chapter tell us how long the captivity of the ark continued-it was in the country of the Philistines seven months. In the field of the Philistines (so it is in the original), from which some gather that, having tried it in all their cities, and found it a plague to the inhabitants of each, at length they sent it into the open fields, upon which mice sprang up out of the ground in great multitudes, and destroyed the corn which was now nearly ripe and marred the land. With that judgment they were plagued (v. 5), and yet it is not mentioned in the foregoing chapter; so God let them know that wherever they carried the ark, so long as they carried it captive, they should find it a curse to them. Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed in the field, Deu. 28:16. But, most take it to signify, as we render it, The country of the Philistines. Now,
