Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, Like these good figs so do I acknowledge The removed of Judah -- that I sent from this place, `To' the land of the Chaldeans -- for good. And I have set Mine eyes on them for good, And have brought them back to this land, And built them up, and I throw not down, And have planted them, and pluck not up.
Good! when one doth stay and stand still For the salvation of Jehovah. Good for a man that he beareth a yoke in his youth. He sitteth alone, and is silent, For He hath laid `it' upon him. He putteth in the dust his mouth, if so be there is hope. He giveth to his smiter the cheek, He is filled with reproach. For the Lord doth not cast off to the age. For though He afflicted, yet He hath pitied, According to the abundance of His kindness. For He hath not afflicted with His heart, Nor doth He grieve the sons of men.
for they, indeed, for a few days, according to what seemed good to them, were chastening, but He for profit, to be partakers of His separation; and all chastening for the present, indeed, doth not seem to be of joy, but of sorrow, yet afterward the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those exercised through it -- it doth yield.

Chapter 8
Moses had charged parents in teaching their children to whet the word of God upon them (ch. 6:7) by frequent repetition of the same things over and over again; and here he himself takes the same method of instructing the Israelites as his children, frequently inculcating the same precepts and cautions, with the same motives or arguments to enforce them, that what they heard so often might abide with them. In this chapter Moses gives them,

The charge here given them is the same as before, to keep and do all God's commandments. Their obedience must be,

Moses, having mentioned the great plenty they would find in the land of Canaan, finds it necessary to caution them against the abuse of that plenty, which was a sin they would be the more prone to new that they came into the vineyard of the Lord, immediately out of a barren desert.
