¹⁵ Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

¹⁶ And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem.

¹⁷ And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate!

¹⁸ And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD.

¹⁹ And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.

¹⁶ And David ^H1732 was then in the hold, ^H4686 and the Philistines' ^H6430 garrison ^H5333 was then at Bethlehem. ^H1035

¹⁷ And David ^H1732 longed, ^H183 and said, ^H559 Oh that one would give me drink ^H8248 of the water ^H4325 of the well ^H953 of Bethlehem, ^H1035 that is at the gate! ^H8179

¹⁸ And the three ^H7969 brake through ^H1234 the host ^H4264 of the Philistines, ^H6430 and drew ^H7579 water ^H4325 out of the well ^H953 of Bethlehem, ^H1035 that was by the gate, ^H8179 and took ^H5375 it, and brought ^H935 it to David: ^H1732 but David ^H1732 would ^H14 not drink ^H8354 of it, but poured it out ^H5258 to the LORD, ^H3068

¹⁹ And said, ^H559 My God ^H430 forbid ^H2486 it me, that I should do ^H6213 this thing: ^H2063 shall I drink ^H8354 the blood ^H1818 of these men ^H582 that have put their lives in jeopardy? ^H5315 for with the jeopardy of their lives ^H5315 they brought ^H935 it. Therefore he would ^H14 not drink ^H8354 it. These things did ^H6213 these three ^H7969 mightiest. ^H1368

¹⁶ and David `is' then in the fortress, and the station of the Philistines `is' then in Beth-Lehem,

¹⁷ and David longeth, and saith, `Who doth give me to drink water from the well of Beth-Lehem, that `is' at the gate!'

¹⁸ And the three break through the camp of the Philistines, and draw water from the well of Beth-Lehem, that `is' at the gate, and bear and bring in unto David, and David hath not been willing to drink it, and poureth it out to Jehovah,

¹⁹ and saith, `Far be it from me, by my God, to do this; the blood of these men do I drink with their lives? for with their lives they have brought it;' and he was not willing to drink it; these `things' did the three mighty ones.

¹⁵ And three of the thirty went down to David, to the rock, into the strong place of Adullam; and the army of the Philistines had taken up their position in the valley of Rephaim.

¹⁶ At that time David had taken cover in the strong place, and an armed force of the Philistines was in Beth-lehem.

¹⁷ And David, moved by a strong desire, said, If only someone would give me a drink of the water from the water-hole of Beth-lehem by the doorway into the town!

¹⁸ So the three, forcing a way through the Philistine army, got water from the water-hole of Beth-lehem, by the doorway into the town, and took it back to David; but David would not take it, but made an offering of it, draining it out to the Lord,

¹⁹ Saying, By my God, far be it from me to do this! How may I take as drink the life-blood of these men who have put their lives in danger? so he did not take it. These things did the three great men of war.
