1 Paul, G3972 called G2822 to be an apostle G652 of Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 through G1223 the will G2307 of God, G2316 and G2532 Sosthenes G4988 our brother, G80
Paul, G3972 a servant G1401 of Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 called G2822 to be an apostle, G652 separated G873 unto G1519 the gospel G2098 of God, G2316
Paul, G3972 an apostle G652 of Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 by G1223 the will G2307 of God, G2316 to the saints G40 which are G5607 at G1722 Ephesus, G2181 and G2532 to the faithful G4103 in G1722 Christ G5547 Jesus: G2424
Paul, G3972 an apostle G652 of Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 by G1223 the will G2307 of God, G2316 and G2532 Timothy G5095 our brother, G80 unto the church G1577 of God G2316 which G3588 is G5607 at G1722 Corinth, G2882 with G4862 all G3956 the saints G40 which G3588 are G5607 in G1722 all G3650 Achaia: G882
Then G1161 all G3956 the Greeks G1672 took G1949 Sosthenes, G4988 the chief ruler of the synagogue, G752 and beat G5180 him before G1715 the judgment seat. G968 And G2532 Gallio G1058 cared G3199 for none G3762 of those things. G5130
Whereunto G1519 G3739 I G1473 am ordained G5087 a preacher, G2783 and G2532 an apostle, G652 (I speak G3004 the truth G225 in G1722 Christ, G5547 and lie G5574 not;) G3756 a teacher G1320 of the Gentiles G1484 in G1722 faith G4102 and G2532 verity. G225
And G2532 he G846 gave G1325 some, G3303 apostles; G652 and G1161 some, prophets; G4396 and G1161 some, evangelists; G2099 and G1161 some, pastors G4166 and G2532 teachers; G1320
But G235 contrariwise, G5121 when they saw G1492 that G3754 the gospel G2098 of the uncircumcision G203 was committed unto me, G4100 as G2531 the gospel of the circumcision G4061 was unto Peter; G4074 (For G1063 he that wrought effectually G1754 in Peter G4074 to G1519 the apostleship G651 of the circumcision, G4061 the same G2532 was mighty G1754 in me G1698 toward G1519 the Gentiles:) G1484
But G1161 when G3753 it pleased G2106 God, G2316 who G3588 separated G873 me G3165 from G1537 my G3450 mother's G3384 womb, G2836 and G2532 called G2564 me by G1223 his G846 grace, G5485 To reveal G601 his G846 Son G5207 in G1722 me, G1698 that G2443 I might preach G2097 him G846 among G1722 the heathen; G1484 immediately G2112 I conferred G4323 not G3756 with flesh G4561 and G2532 blood: G129
Paul, G3972 an apostle, G652 (not G3756 of G575 men, G444 neither G3761 by G1223 man, G444 but G235 by G1223 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 and G2532 God G2316 the Father, G3962 who G3588 raised G1453 him G846 from G1537 the dead;) G3498
For G1063 I G1473 am G1510 the least G1646 of the apostles, G652 that G3739 am G1510 not G3756 meet G2425 to be called G2564 an apostle, G652 because G1360 I persecuted G1377 the church G1577 of God. G2316
Am G1510 I not G3756 an apostle? G652 am G1510 I not G3756 free? G1658 have I not G3780 seen G3708 Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 our G2257 Lord? G2962 are G2075 not G3756 ye G5210 my G3450 work G2041 in G1722 the Lord? G2962 If G1487 I be G1510 not G3756 an apostle G652 unto others, G243 yet G235 doubtless G1065 I am G1510 to you: G5213 for G1063 the seal G4973 of mine G1699 apostleship G651 are G2075 ye G5210 in G1722 the Lord. G2962
What? G2228 know ye G1492 not G3756 that G3754 he which is joined G2853 to an harlot G4204 is G2076 one G1520 body? G4983 for G1063 two, G1417 saith he, G5346 shall be G2071 one G1519 G3391 flesh. G4561 But G1161 he that is joined G2853 unto the Lord G2962 is G2076 one G1520 spirit. G4151
For G1063 we are G2070 labourers together G4904 with God: G2316 ye are G2075 God's G2316 husbandry, G1091 ye are God's G2316 building. G3619
That he may take G2983 part G2819 of this G5026 ministry G1248 and G2532 apostleship, G651 from G1537 which G3739 Judas G2455 by transgression fell, G3845 that he might go G4198 to G1519 his own G2398 place. G5117 And G2532 they gave forth G1325 their G846 lots; G2819 and G2532 the lot G2819 fell G4098 upon G1909 Matthias; G3159 and G2532 he was numbered G4785 with G3326 the eleven G1733 apostles. G652
Ye G5210 have G1586 not G3756 chosen G1586 me, G3165 but G235 I G1473 have chosen G1586 you, G5209 and G2532 ordained G5087 you, G5209 that G2443 ye G5210 should go G5217 and G2532 bring forth G5342 fruit, G2590 and G2532 that your G5216 fruit G2590 should remain: G3306 that G2443 whatsoever G3739 G302 G3748 ye shall ask G154 of the Father G3962 in G1722 my G3450 name, G3686 he may give it G1325 you. Commentary on 1 Corinthians 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 1
In this chapter we have,
1Cr 1:1-9
We have here the apostle's preface to his whole epistle, in which we may take notice,
1Cr 1:10-13
Here the apostle enters on his subject.
1Cr 1:14-16
Here the apostle gives an account of his ministry among them. He thanks God he had baptized but a few among them, Crispus, who had been a ruler of a synagogue at Corinth (Acts 18:8), Gaius, and the household of Stephanas, besides whom, he says, he did not remember that he had baptized any. But how was this a proper matter for thankfulness? Was it not a part of the apostolical commission to baptize all nations? And could Paul give thanks to God for his own neglect of duty? He is not to be understood in such a sense as if he were thankful for not having baptized at all, but for not having done it in present circumstances, lest it should have had this very bad construction put upon it-that he had baptized in his own name, made disciples for himself, or set himself up as the head of a sect. He left it to other ministers to baptize, while he set himself to more useful work, and filled up his time with preaching the gospel. This, he thought, was more his business, because the more important business of the two. He had assistants that could baptize, when none could discharge the other part of his office so well as himself. In this sense he says, Christ sent him not to baptize, but to preach the gospel-not so much to baptize as to preach. Note, Ministers should consider themselves sent and set apart more especially to that service in which Christ will be most honoured and the salvation of souls promoted, and for which they are best fitted, though no part of their duty is to be neglected. The principal business Paul did among them was to preach the gospel (v. 17), the cross (v. 18), Christ crucified, v. 23. Ministers are the soldiers of Christ, and are to erect and display the banner of the cross. He did not preach his own fancy, but the gospel-the glad tidings of peace, and reconciliation to God, through the mediation of a crucified Redeemer. This is the sum and substance of the gospel. Christ crucified is the foundation of all our joys. By his death we live. This is what Paul preached, what all ministers should preach, and what all the saints live upon.
