10 And the king H4428 of Israel H3478 and Jehoshaphat H3092 the king H4428 of Judah H3063 sat H3427 each H376 on his throne, H3678 having put on H3847 their robes, H899 in a void place H1637 in the entrance H6607 of the gate H8179 of Samaria; H8111 and all the prophets H5030 prophesied H5012 before H6440 them.
And the king H4428 of Israel H3478 and Jehoshaphat H3092 king H4428 of Judah H3063 sat H3427 either H376 of them on his throne, H3678 clothed H3847 in their robes, H899 and they sat H3427 in a void place H1637 at the entering in H6607 of the gate H8179 of Samaria; H8111 and all the prophets H5030 prophesied H5012 before H6440 them. And Zedekiah H6667 the son H1121 of Chenaanah H3668 had made H6213 him horns H7161 of iron, H1270 and said, H559 Thus saith H559 the LORD, H3068 With these thou shalt push H5055 Syria H758 until they be consumed. H3615 And all the prophets H5030 prophesied H5012 so, saying, H559 Go up H5927 to Ramothgilead, H7433 H1568 and prosper: H6743 for the LORD H3068 shall deliver H5414 it into the hand H3027 of the king. H4428
Let the royal H4438 apparel H3830 be brought H935 which the king H4428 useth to wear, H3847 and the horse H5483 that the king H4428 rideth H7392 upon, and the crown H3804 royal H4438 which is set H5414 upon his head: H7218 And let this apparel H3830 and horse H5483 be delivered H5414 to the hand H3027 of one H376 of the king's H4428 most noble H6579 princes, H8269 that they may array H3847 the man H376 withal whom the king H4428 delighteth H2654 to honour, H3366 and bring H7392 him on horseback H5483 through the street H7339 of the city, H5892 and proclaim H7121 before H6440 him, Thus shall it be done H6213 to the man H376 whom the king H4428 delighteth H2654 to honour. H3366
Therefore hearken H8085 not unto the words H1697 of the prophets H5030 that speak H559 unto you, saying, H559 Ye shall not serve H5647 the king H4428 of Babylon: H894 for they prophesy H5012 a lie H8267 unto you. For I have not sent H7971 them, saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 yet they prophesy H5012 a lie H8267 in my name; H8034 that I might drive you out, H5080 and that ye might perish, H6 ye, and the prophets H5030 that prophesy H5012 unto you. Also I spake H1696 to the priests H3548 and to all this people, H5971 saying, H559 Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 Hearken H8085 not to the words H1697 of your prophets H5030 that prophesy H5012 unto you, saying, H559 Behold, the vessels H3627 of the LORD'S H3068 house H1004 shall now shortly H4120 be brought again H7725 from Babylon: H894 for they prophesy H5012 a lie H8267 unto you.
And the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 came unto me, saying, H559 Son H1121 of man, H120 prophesy H5012 against the prophets H5030 of Israel H3478 that prophesy, H5012 and say H559 thou unto them that prophesy H5030 out of their own hearts, H3820 Hear H8085 ye the word H1697 of the LORD; H3068 Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 Woe H1945 unto the foolish H5036 prophets, H5030 that follow H1980 H310 their own spirit, H7307 and have seen H7200 nothing! O Israel, H3478 thy prophets H5030 are like the foxes H7776 in the deserts. H2723 Ye have not gone up H5927 into the gaps, H6556 neither made up H1443 the hedge H1447 for the house H1004 of Israel H3478 to stand H5975 in the battle H4421 in the day H3117 of the LORD. H3068 They have seen H2372 vanity H7723 and lying H3577 divination, H7081 saying, H559 The LORD H3068 saith: H5002 and the LORD H3068 hath not sent H7971 them: and they have made others to hope H3176 that they would confirm H6965 the word. H1697 Have ye not seen H2372 a vain H7723 vision, H4236 and have ye not spoken H1696 a lying H3577 divination, H4738 whereas ye say, H559 The LORD H3068 saith H5002 it; albeit I have not spoken? H559 Therefore thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 Because ye have spoken H1696 vanity, H7723 and seen H2372 lies, H3577 therefore, behold, I am against you, saith H5002 the Lord H136 GOD. H3069 And mine hand H3027 shall be upon the prophets H5030 that see H2374 vanity, H7723 and that divine H7080 lies: H3577 they shall not be in the assembly H5475 of my people, H5971 neither shall they be written H3789 in the writing H3791 of the house H1004 of Israel, H3478 neither shall they enter H935 into the land H127 of Israel; H3478 and ye shall know H3045 that I am the Lord H136 GOD. Commentary on 1 Kings 22 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 22
This chapter finishes the history of Ahab's reign. It was promised in the close of the foregoing chapter that the ruin of his house should not come in his days, but his days were soon at an end. His war with the Syrians at Ramoth-Gilead is that which we have an account of in this chapter.
1Ki 22:1-14
Though Ahab continued under guilt and wrath, and the dominion of the lusts to which he had sold himself, yet, as a reward for his professions of repentance and humiliation, though the time drew near when he should descend into battle and perish, yet we have him blessed with a three years' peace (v. 1) and an honourable visit made him by Jehoshaphat king of Judah, v. 2. The Jews have a fabulous conceit, that when Ahab humbled himself for his sin, and lay in sackcloth, he sent for Jehoshaphat to come to him, to chastise him; and that he staid with him for some time, and gave him so many stripes every day. This is a groundless tradition. He came now, it is probable, to consult him about the affairs of their kingdoms. It is strange that so great a man as Jehoshaphat would pay so much respect to a kingdom revolted from the house of David, and that so good a man should show so much kindness to a king revolted from the worship of God. But, though he was a godly man, his temper was too easy, which betrayed him into snares and inconveniences. The Syrians durst not give Ahab any disturbance. But,
1Ki 22:15-28
Here Micaiah does well, but, as is common, suffers ill for so doing.
1Ki 22:29-40
The matter in contest between God's prophet and Ahab's prophets is here soon determined, and it is made to appear which was in the right. Here,
Lastly, The story of Ahab is here concluded in the usual form, v. 39, 40. Among his works mention is made of an ivory house which he built, so called because many parts of it were inlaid with ivory; perhaps it was intended to vie with the stately palace of the kings of Judah, which Solomon built.
