36 And Abigail H26 came H935 to Nabal; H5037 and, behold, he held a feast H4960 in his house, H1004 like the feast H4960 of a king; H4428 and Nabal's H5037 heart H3820 was merry H2896 within him, for he was very H3966 drunken: H7910 wherefore she told H5046 him nothing, H1697 less H6996 or more, H1419 until the morning H1242 light. H216
For G1063 they that sleep G2518 sleep G2518 in the night; G3571 and G2532 they that be drunken G3182 are drunken G3184 in the night. G3571 But G1161 let G3525 us, G2249 who are G5607 of the day, G2250 be sober, G3525 putting on G1746 the breastplate G2382 of faith G4102 and G2532 love; G26 and G2532 for an helmet, G4030 the hope G1680 of salvation. G4991
Woe H1945 unto him that giveth his neighbour H7453 drink, H8248 that puttest H5596 thy bottle H2573 to him, and makest him drunken H7937 also, that thou mayest look H5027 on their nakedness! H4589 Thou art filled H7646 with shame H7036 for glory: H3519 drink H8354 thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: H6188 the cup H3563 of the LORD'S H3068 right hand H3225 shall be turned H5437 unto thee, and shameful spewing H7022 shall be on thy glory. H3519
Belshazzar H1113 the king H4430 made H5648 a great H7229 feast H3900 to a thousand H506 of his lords, H7261 and drank H8355 wine H2562 before H6903 the thousand. H506 Belshazzar, H1113 whiles he tasted H2942 the wine, H2562 commanded H560 to bring H858 the golden H1722 and silver H3702 vessels H3984 which his father H2 Nebuchadnezzar H5020 had taken H5312 out of H4481 the temple H1965 which was in Jerusalem; H3390 that the king, H4430 and his princes, H7261 his wives, H7695 and his concubines, H3904 might drink H8355 therein. Then H116 they brought H858 the golden H1722 vessels H3984 that were taken H5312 out of H4481 the temple H1965 of the house H1005 of God H426 which was at Jerusalem; H3390 and the king, H4430 and his princes, H7261 his wives, H7695 and his concubines, H3904 drank H8355 in them. They drank H8355 wine, H2562 and praised H7624 the gods H426 of gold, H1722 and of silver, H3702 of brass, H5174 of iron, H6523 of wood, H636 and of stone. H69 In the same hour H8160 came forth H5312 fingers H677 of a man's H606 hand, H3028 and wrote H3790 over against H6903 the candlestick H5043 upon H5922 the plaister H1528 of the wall H3797 of the king's H4430 palace: H1965 and the king H4430 saw H2370 the part H6447 of the hand H3028 that wrote. H3790
But they H428 also have erred H7686 through wine, H3196 and through strong drink H7941 are out of the way; H8582 the priest H3548 and the prophet H5030 have erred H7686 through strong drink, H7941 they are swallowed up H1104 of H4480 wine, H3196 they are out of the way H8582 through strong drink; H7941 they err H7686 in vision, H7203 they stumble H6328 in judgment. H6417 For all tables H7979 are full H4390 of vomit H6892 and filthiness, H6675 so that there is no place H4725 clean.
I said H559 of laughter, H7814 It is mad: H1984 and of mirth, H8057 What H2090 doeth H6213 it? I sought H8446 in mine heart H3820 to give H4900 myself H1320 unto wine, H3196 yet acquainting H5090 mine heart H3820 with wisdom; H2451 and to lay hold H270 on folly, H5531 till I might see H7200 what was that good H2896 for the sons H1121 of men, H120 which they should do H6213 under the heaven H8064 all H4557 the days H3117 of their life. H2416
In the third H7969 year H8141 of his reign, H4427 he made H6213 a feast H4960 unto all his princes H8269 and his servants; H5650 the power H2428 of Persia H6539 and Media, H4074 the nobles H6579 and princes H8269 of the provinces, H4082 being before H6440 him: When he shewed H7200 the riches H6239 of his glorious H3519 kingdom H4438 and the honour H3366 of his excellent H8597 majesty H1420 many H7227 days, H3117 even an hundred H3967 and fourscore H8084 days. H3117 And when these days H3117 were expired, H4390 the king H4428 made H6213 a feast H4960 unto all the people H5971 that were present H4672 in Shushan H7800 the palace, H1002 both unto great H1419 and small, H6996 seven H7651 days, H3117 in the court H2691 of the garden H1594 of the king's H4428 palace; H1055 Where were white, H2353 green, H3768 and blue, H8504 hangings, fastened H270 with cords H2256 of fine linen H948 and purple H713 to silver H3701 rings H1550 and pillars H5982 of marble: H8336 the beds H4296 were of gold H2091 and silver, H3701 upon a pavement H7531 of red, H923 and blue, H8504 and white, H1858 and black, H5508 marble. H8336 And they gave them drink H8248 in vessels H3627 of gold, H2091 (the vessels H3627 being diverse H8138 one from another,) H3627 and royal H4438 wine H3196 in abundance, H7227 according to the state H3027 of the king. H4428
Who hath woe? H188 who hath sorrow? H17 who hath contentions? H4079 H4066 who hath babbling? H7879 who hath wounds H6482 without cause? H2600 who hath redness H2448 of eyes? H5869 They that tarry long H309 at the wine; H3196 they that go H935 to seek H2713 mixed wine. H4469 Look H7200 not thou upon the wine H3196 when it is red, H119 when it giveth H5414 his colour H5869 in the cup, H3563 H3599 when it moveth H1980 itself aright. H4339 At the last H319 it biteth H5391 like a serpent, H5175 and stingeth H6567 like an adder. H6848 Thine eyes H5869 shall behold H7200 strange women, H2114 and thine heart H3820 shall utter H1696 perverse things. H8419 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down H7901 in the midst H3820 of the sea, H3220 or as he that lieth H7901 upon the top H7218 of a mast. H2260 They have stricken H5221 me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; H2470 they have beaten H1986 me, and I felt H3045 it not: when shall I awake? H6974 I will seek H1245 it yet H3254 again.

Commentary on 1 Samuel 25 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 25
We have here some intermission of David's troubles by Saul. Providence favoured him with a breathing time, and yet this chapter gives us instances of the troubles of David. If one vexation seems to be over, we must not be secure; a storm may arise from some other point, as here to David.
1Sa 25:1
We have here a short account of Samuel's death and burial.
1Sa 25:2-11
Here begins the story of Nabal.
1Sa 25:12-17
Here is,
1Sa 25:18-31
We have here an account of Abigail's prudent management for the preserving of her husband and family from the destruction that was just coming upon them; and we find that she did her part admirably well and fully answered her character. The passion of fools often makes those breaches in a little time which the wise, with all their wisdom, have much ado to make up again. It is hard to say whether Abigail was more miserable in such a husband or Nabal happy in such a wife. A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband, to protect as well as adorn, and will do him good and not evil. Wisdom in such a case as this was better than weapons of war.
Abigail must endeavour to atone for Nabal's faults. Now he had been in two ways rude to David's messengers, and in them to David: He had denied them the provisions they asked for, and he had given them very provoking language. Now,
1Sa 25:32-35
As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear, Prov. 25:12. Abigail was a wise reprover of David's passion, and he gave an obedient ear to the reproof, according to his own principle (Ps. 141:5): Let the righteous smite me, it shall be a kindness. Never was such an admonition either better given or better taken.
1Sa 25:36-44
We are now to attend Nabal's funeral and Abigail's wedding.
