2 And the LORD H3068 sent H7971 against him bands H1416 of the Chaldees, H3778 and bands H1416 of the Syrians, H758 and bands H1416 of the Moabites, H4124 and bands H1416 of the children H1121 of Ammon, H5983 and sent H7971 them against Judah H3063 to destroy H6 it, according to the word H1697 of the LORD, H3068 which he spake H1696 by H3027 his servants H5650 the prophets. H5030
But it came to pass, when Nebuchadrezzar H5019 king H4428 of Babylon H894 came up H5927 into the land, H776 that we said, H559 Come, H935 and let us go H935 to Jerusalem H3389 for fear H6440 of the army H2428 of the Chaldeans, H3778 and for fear H6440 of the army H2428 of the Syrians: H758 so we dwell H3427 at Jerusalem. H3389
And the LORD H3068 said, H559 I will remove H5493 Judah H3063 also out of my sight, H6440 as I have removed H5493 Israel, H3478 and will cast off H3988 this city H5892 Jerusalem H3389 which I have chosen, H977 and the house H1004 of which I said, H559 My name H8034 shall be there.
Therefore thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 Behold, I will give H5414 this city H5892 into the hand H3027 of the Chaldeans, H3778 and into the hand H3027 of Nebuchadrezzar H5019 king H4428 of Babylon, H894 and he shall take H3920 it:
Behold, I will send H7971 and take H3947 all the families H4940 of the north, H6828 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 and Nebuchadrezzar H5019 the king H4428 of Babylon, H894 my servant, H5650 and will bring H935 them against this land, H776 and against the inhabitants H3427 thereof, and against all these nations H1471 round about, H5439 and will utterly destroy H2763 them, and make H7760 them an astonishment, H8047 and an hissing, H8322 and perpetual H5769 desolations. H2723
Therefore thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 Behold, I am bringing H935 such evil H7451 upon Jerusalem H3389 and Judah, H3063 that whosoever heareth H8085 of it, both H8147 his ears H241 shall tingle. H6750 And I will stretch H5186 over Jerusalem H3389 the line H6957 of Samaria, H8111 and the plummet H4949 of the house H1004 of Ahab: H256 and I will wipe H4229 Jerusalem H3389 as a man wipeth H4229 a dish, H6747 wiping H4229 it, and turning H2015 it upside down. H6440 And I will forsake H5203 the remnant H7611 of mine inheritance, H5159 and deliver H5414 them into the hand H3027 of their enemies; H341 and they shall become a prey H957 and a spoil H4933 to all their enemies; H341
Behold, the days H3117 come, H935 that all that is in thine house, H1004 and that which thy fathers H1 have laid up in store H686 unto this day, H3117 shall be carried H5375 into Babylon: H894 nothing H1697 shall be left, H3498 saith H559 the LORD. H3068
The LORD H3068 shall bring H5375 a nation H1471 against thee from far, H7350 from the end H7097 of the earth, H776 as swift as the eagle H5404 flieth; H1675 a nation H1471 whose tongue H3956 thou shalt not understand; H8085 A nation H1471 of fierce H5794 countenance, H6440 which shall not regard H5375 the person H6440 of the old, H2205 nor shew favour H2603 to the young: H5288
And there was also a man H376 that prophesied H5012 in the name H8034 of the LORD, H3068 Urijah H223 the son H1121 of Shemaiah H8098 of Kirjathjearim, H7157 who prophesied H5012 against this city H5892 and against this land H776 according to all the words H1697 of Jeremiah: H3414
They come H935 from a far H4801 country, H776 from the end H7097 of heaven, H8064 even the LORD, H3068 and the weapons H3627 of his indignation, H2195 to destroy H2254 the whole land. H776
The LORD H3068 shall bring H935 upon thee, and upon thy people, H5971 and upon thy father's H1 house, H1004 days H3117 that have not come, H935 from the day H3117 that Ephraim H669 departed H5493 from Judah; H3063 even the king H4428 of Assyria. H804
Then said H559 I, Lord, H136 how long? And he answered, H559 Until the cities H5892 be wasted H7582 without inhabitant, H3427 and the houses H1004 without man, H120 and the land H127 be utterly H8077 desolate, H7582 And the LORD H3068 have removed H7368 men H120 far away, H7368 and there be a great H7227 forsaking H5805 in the midst H7130 of the land. H776
While he was yet speaking, H1696 there came H935 also another, and said, H559 The Chaldeans H3778 made out H7760 three H7969 bands, H7218 and fell H6584 upon the camels, H1581 and have carried them away, H3947 yea, and slain H5221 the servants H5288 with the edge H6310 of the sword; H2719 and I only am escaped H4422 alone to tell H5046 thee.
Wherefore the LORD H3068 brought H935 upon them the captains of H8269 the host of H6635 the king H4428 of Assyria, H804 which took H3920 Manasseh H4519 among the thorns, H2336 and bound him H631 with fetters, H5178 and carried H3212 him to Babylon. H894
And Elisha H477 died, H4191 and they buried H6912 him. And the bands H1416 of the Moabites H4124 invaded H935 the land H776 at the coming in H935 of the year. H8141 And it came to pass, as they were burying H6912 a man, H376 that, behold, they spied H7200 a band H1416 of men; and they cast H7993 the man H376 into the sepulchre H6913 of Elisha: H477 and when the man H376 was let down, H3212 and touched H5060 the bones H6106 of Elisha, H477 he revived, H2421 and stood up H6965 on his feet. Commentary on 2 Kings 24 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 24
Things are here ripening for, and hastening towards, the utter destruction of Jerusalem. We left Jehoiakim on the throne, placed there by the king of Egypt: now here we have,
2Ki 24:1-7
We have here the first mention of a name which makes a great figure both in the histories and in the prophecies of the Old Testament; it is that of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon (v. 1), that head of gold. He was a potent prince, and one that was the terror of the mighty in the land of the living; and yet his name would not have been known in sacred writ if he had not been employed in the destruction of Jerusalem and the captivity of the Jews.
2Ki 24:8-20
This should have been the history of king Jehoiachin's reign, but, alas! it is only the history of king Jehoiachin's captivity, as it is called, Eze. 1:2. He came to the crown, not to have the honour of wearing it, but the shame of losing it. Ideo tantum venerat, ut exiret-He came in only to go out.
