3 Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of Damascus, H1834 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because they have threshed H1758 Gilead H1568 with threshing instruments H2742 of iron: H1270
Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of Israel, H3478 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because they sold H4376 the righteous H6662 for silver, H3701 and the poor H34 for a pair of shoes; H5275
Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of Tyrus, H6865 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because they delivered up H5462 the whole H8003 captivity H1546 to Edom, H123 and remembered H2142 not the brotherly H251 covenant: H1285
Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of Judah, H3063 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because they have despised H3988 the law H8451 of the LORD, H3068 and have not kept H8104 his commandments, H2706 and their lies H3577 caused them to err, H8582 after H310 the which their fathers H1 have walked: H1980
Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of Moab, H4124 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because he burned H8313 the bones H6106 of the king H4428 of Edom H123 into lime: H7875
Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of the children H1121 of Ammon, H5983 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because they have ripped up H1234 the women with child H2030 of Gilead, H1568 that they might enlarge H7337 their border: H1366
Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of Gaza, H5804 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive H1540 the whole H8003 captivity, H1546 to deliver them up H5462 to Edom: H123
Concerning Damascus. H1834 Hamath H2574 is confounded, H954 and Arpad: H774 for they have heard H8085 evil H7451 tidings: H8052 they are fainthearted; H4127 there is sorrow H1674 on the sea; H3220 it cannot H3201 be quiet. H8252 Damascus H1834 is waxed feeble, H7503 and turneth H6437 herself to flee, H5127 and fear H7374 hath seized H2388 on her: anguish H6869 and sorrows H2256 have taken H270 her, as a woman in travail. H3205 How is the city H5892 of praise H8416 not left, H5800 the city H7151 of my joy! H4885 Therefore her young men H970 shall fall H5307 in her streets, H7339 and all the men H582 of war H4421 shall be cut off H1826 in that day, H3117 saith H5002 the LORD H3068 of hosts. H6635 And I will kindle H3341 a fire H784 in the wall H2346 of Damascus, H1834 and it shall consume H398 the palaces H759 of Benhadad. H1130
The burden H4853 of Damascus. H1834 Behold, Damascus H1834 is taken away H5493 from being a city, H5892 and it shall be a ruinous H4654 heap. H4596 The cities H5892 of Aroer H6177 are forsaken: H5800 they shall be for flocks, H5739 which shall lie down, H7257 and none shall make them afraid. H2729 The fortress H4013 also shall cease H7673 from Ephraim, H669 and the kingdom H4467 from Damascus, H1834 and the remnant H7605 of Syria: H758 they shall be as the glory H3519 of the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 saith H5002 the LORD H3068 of hosts. H6635
The burden H4853 of the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 in the land H776 of Hadrach, H2317 and Damascus H1834 shall be the rest H4496 thereof: when the eyes H5869 of man, H120 as of all the tribes H7626 of Israel, H3478 shall be toward the LORD. H3068
Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 For three H7969 transgressions H6588 of Edom, H123 and for four, H702 I will not turn away H7725 the punishment thereof; because he did pursue H7291 his brother H251 with the sword, H2719 and did cast off H7843 all pity, H7356 and his anger H639 did tear H2963 perpetually, H5703 and he kept H8104 his wrath H5678 for ever: H5331
In those days H3117 the LORD H3068 began H2490 to cut H7096 Israel H3478 short: H7096 and Hazael H2371 smote H5221 them in all the coasts H1366 of Israel; H3478 From Jordan H3383 eastward, H4217 H8121 all the land H776 of Gilead, H1568 the Gadites, H1425 and the Reubenites, H7206 and the Manassites, H4520 from Aroer, H6177 which is by the river H5158 Arnon, H769 even Gilead H1568 and Bashan. H1316
And Hazael H2371 said, H559 Why weepeth H1058 my lord? H113 And he answered, H559 Because I know H3045 the evil H7451 that thou wilt do H6213 unto the children H1121 of Israel: H3478 their strong holds H4013 wilt thou set H7971 on fire, H784 and their young men H970 wilt thou slay H2026 with the sword, H2719 and wilt dash H7376 their children, H5768 and rip up H1234 their women with child. H2030
For the head H7218 of Syria H758 is Damascus, H1834 and the head H7218 of Damascus H1834 is Rezin; H7526 and within threescore H8346 and five H2568 years H8141 shall Ephraim H669 be broken, H2865 that it be not a people. H5971
These ten H6235 times H6471 have ye reproached H3637 me: ye are not ashamed H954 that ye make yourselves strange H1970 to me.
He shall deliver H5337 thee in six H8337 troubles: H6869 yea, in seven H7651 there shall no evil H7451 touch H5060 thee.
Neither did he leave H7604 of the people H5971 to Jehoahaz H3059 but fifty H2572 horsemen, H6571 and ten H6235 chariots, H7393 and ten H6235 thousand H505 footmen; H7273 for the king H4428 of Syria H758 had destroyed H6 them, and had made H7760 them like the dust H6083 by threshing. H1758

Commentary on Amos 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The Prophecy of Amos
Chapter 1
In this chapter we have,
Amo 1:1-2
Here is,
Amo 1:3-15
What the Lord says here may be explained by what he says Jer. 12:14, Thus said the Lord, against all my evil neighbours that touch the inheritance of my people Israel, Behold, I will pluck them out. Damascus was a near neighbour to Israel on the north, Tyre and Gaza on the west, Edom on the south, Ammon and (in the next chapter) Moab on the east; and all of them had been, one time, one way, or other, pricking briers and grieving thorns to Israel, evil neighbours to them; and, because God espouses his people's cause, he there calls them his evil neighbours, and here comes forth to reckon with them. The method is taken in dealing with each of them is, in part, the same, and therefore we put them together, and yet in each there is something peculiar.
