7 The king H4430 cried H7123 aloud H2429 to bring H5954 in the astrologers, H826 the Chaldeans, H3779 and the soothsayers. H1505 And the king H4430 spake, H6032 and said H560 to the wise H2445 men of Babylon, H895 Whosoever H606 H3606 shall read H7123 this H1836 writing, H3792 and shew H2324 me the interpretation H6591 thereof, shall be clothed H3848 with scarlet, H711 and have a chain H2002 of gold H1722 about H5922 his neck, H6676 and shall be the third H8523 ruler H7981 in the kingdom. H4437
Then H116 commanded H560 Belshazzar, H1113 and they clothed H3848 Daniel H1841 with scarlet, H711 and put a chain H2002 of gold H1722 about H5922 his neck, H6676 and made a proclamation H3745 concerning H5922 him, that he should be H1934 the third H8531 ruler H7990 in the kingdom. H4437
And I H576 have heard H8086 of thee, H5922 that thou canst H3202 make H6590 interpretations, H6591 and dissolve H8271 doubts: H7001 now H3705 if H2006 thou canst H3202 read H7123 the writing, H3792 and make known H3046 to me the interpretation H6591 thereof, thou shalt be clothed H3848 with scarlet, H711 and have a chain H2002 of gold H1722 about H5922 thy neck, H6676 and shalt be the third H8531 ruler H7981 in the kingdom. H4437
And over H5924 these H4481 three H8532 presidents; H5632 of whom H4481 Daniel H1841 was first: H2298 that H459 the princes H324 might H1934 give H3052 accounts H2941 unto them, and the king H4430 should have H1934 no H3809 damage. H5142 Then H116 this H1836 Daniel H1841 was H1934 preferred H5330 above H5922 the presidents H5632 and princes, H324 because H3606 H6903 an excellent H3493 spirit H7308 was in him; and the king H4430 thought H6246 to set H6966 him over H5922 the whole H3606 realm. H4437
Then H116 the king H4430 made H7236 Daniel H1841 a great man, H7236 and gave H3052 him many H7690 great H7260 gifts, H4978 and made him ruler H7981 over H5922 the whole H3606 province H4083 of Babylon, H895 and chief H7229 of the governors H5460 over H5922 all H3606 the wise H2445 men of Babylon. H895
But if H2006 ye shew H2324 the dream, H2493 and the interpretation H6591 thereof, ye shall receive H6902 of H4481 me H6925 gifts H4978 and rewards H5023 and great H7690 honour: H3367 therefore H3861 shew H2324 me the dream, H2493 and the interpretation H6591 thereof.
I decked H5710 thee also with ornaments, H5716 and I put H5414 bracelets H6781 upon thy hands, H3027 and a chain H7242 on thy neck. H1627
Thou art wearied H3811 in the multitude H7230 of thy counsels. H6098 Let now the astrologers, H1895 H8064 the stargazers, H2374 H3556 the monthly H2320 prognosticators, H3045 stand up, H5975 and save H3467 thee from these things that shall come H935 upon thee.
And Pharaoh H6547 took off H5493 his ring H2885 from his hand, H3027 and put H5414 it upon Joseph's H3130 hand, H3027 and arrayed H3847 him in vestures H899 of fine linen, H8336 and put H7760 a gold H2091 chain H7242 about his neck; H6677 And he made him to ride H7392 in the second H4932 chariot H4818 which he had; and they cried H7121 before him, H6440 Bow the knee: H86 and he made H5414 him ruler over all the land H776 of Egypt. H4714 And Pharaoh H6547 said H559 unto Joseph, H3130 I am Pharaoh, H6547 and without H1107 thee shall no man H376 lift up H7311 his hand H3027 or foot H7272 in all the land H776 of Egypt. H4714
Therefore H4481 made H7761 I H4481 a decree H2942 to bring H5954 in all H3606 the wise H2445 men of Babylon H895 before H6925 me, that they might make known H3046 unto me the interpretation H6591 of the dream. H2493 Then H116 came H5954 in the magicians, H2749 the astrologers, H826 the Chaldeans, H3779 and the soothsayers: H1505 and I H576 told H560 the dream H2493 before H6925 them; but they did not H3809 make known H3046 unto me the interpretation H6591 thereof.
He cried H7123 aloud, H2429 and said H560 thus, H3652 Hew down H1414 the tree, H363 and cut off H7113 his branches, H6056 shake off H5426 his leaves, H6074 and scatter H921 his fruit: H4 let the beasts H2423 get away H5111 from H4481 under it, H8479 and the fowls H6853 from H4481 his branches: H6056
And it came to pass in the morning H1242 that his spirit H7307 was troubled; H6470 and he sent H7971 and called H7121 for all the magicians H2748 of Egypt, H4714 and all the wise men H2450 thereof: and Pharaoh H6547 told H5608 them his dream; H2472 but there was none that could interpret H6622 them unto Pharaoh. H6547
That frustrateth H6565 the tokens H226 of the liars, H907 and maketh diviners H7080 mad; H1984 that turneth H7725 wise H2450 men backward, H268 and maketh their knowledge H1847 foolish; H5528 That confirmeth H6965 the word H1697 of his servant, H5650 and performeth H7999 the counsel H6098 of his messengers; H4397 that saith H559 to Jerusalem, H3389 Thou shalt be inhabited; H3427 and to the cities H5892 of Judah, H3063 Ye shall be built, H1129 and I will raise up H6965 the decayed places H2723 thereof:
And all the acts H4639 of his power H8633 and of his might, H1369 and the declaration H6575 of the greatness H1420 of Mordecai, H4782 whereunto the king H4428 advanced H1431 him, are they not written H3789 in the book H5612 of the chronicles H1697 H3117 of the kings H4428 of Media H4074 and Persia? H6539 For Mordecai H4782 the Jew H3064 was next H4932 unto king H4428 Ahasuerus, H325 and great H1419 among the Jews, H3064 and accepted H7521 of the multitude H7230 of his brethren, H251 seeking H1875 the wealth H2896 of his people, H5971 and speaking H1696 peace H7965 to all his seed. H2233
After H310 these things H1697 did king H4428 Ahasuerus H325 promote H1431 Haman H2001 the son H1121 of Hammedatha H4099 the Agagite, H91 and advanced H5375 him, and set H7760 his seat H3678 above all the princes H8269 that were with him.
And the men H376 of Israel H3478 said, H559 Have ye seen H7200 this man H376 that is come up? H5927 surely to defy H2778 Israel H3478 is he come up: H5927 and it shall be, that the man H376 who killeth H5221 him, the king H4428 will enrich H6238 him with great H1419 riches, H6239 and will give H5414 him his daughter, H1323 and make H6213 his father's H1 house H1004 free H2670 in Israel. H3478
Therefore now flee H1272 thou to thy place: H4725 I thought H559 to promote H3513 thee unto great H3513 honour; H3513 but, lo, the LORD H3068 hath kept thee back H4513 from honour. H3519

Commentary on Daniel 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
The destruction of the kingdom of Babylon had been long and often foretold when it was at a distance; in this chapter we have it accomplished, and a prediction of it the very same night that it was accomplished. Belshazzar now reigned in Babylon; some compute he had reigned seventeen years, others but three; we have here the story of his exit and the period of his kingdom. We must know that about two years before this Cyrus king of Persia, a growing monarch, came against Babylon with a great army; Belshazzar met him, fought him, and was routed by him in a pitched battle. He and his scattered forces retired into the city, where Cyrus besieged them. They were very secure, because the river Euphrates was their bulwark, and they had twenty years; provision in the city; but in the second year of the siege he took it, as is here related. We have in this chapter,
Dan 5:1-9
We have here Belshazzar the king very gay, but all of a sudden very gloomy, and in straits in the fulness of his sufficiency. See how he affronts God, and God affrights him; and wait what will be the issue of this contest; and whether he that hardened his heart against God prospered.
