22 But he hanged H8518 the chief H8269 baker: H644 as Joseph H3130 had interpreted H6622 to them.
Yet within three H7969 days H3117 shall Pharaoh H6547 lift up H5375 thy head H7218 from off thee, and shall hang H8518 thee on a tree; H6086 and the birds H5775 shall eat H398 thy flesh H1320 from off thee.
And they said H559 unto him, We have dreamed H2492 a dream, H2472 and there is no interpreter H6622 of it. And Joseph H3130 said H559 unto them, Do not interpretations H6623 belong to God? H430 tell me H5608 them, I pray you.
And we dreamed H2492 a dream H2472 in one H259 night, H3915 I and he; we dreamed H2492 each man H376 according to the interpretation H6623 of his dream. H2472 And there was there with us a young man, H5288 an Hebrew, H5680 servant H5650 to the captain H8269 of the guard; H2876 and we told H5608 him, and he interpreted H6622 to us our dreams; H2472 to each man H376 according to his dream H2472 he did interpret. H6622 And it came to pass, as he interpreted H6622 to us, so it was; me he restored H7725 unto mine office, H3653 and him he hanged. H8518
And Joseph H3130 answered H6030 Pharaoh, H6547 saying, H559 It is not in me: H1107 God H430 shall give H6030 Pharaoh H6547 an answer H6030 of peace. H7965
The prophet H5030 that hath a dream, H2472 let him tell H5608 a dream; H2472 and he that hath my word, H1697 let him speak H1696 my word H1697 faithfully. H571 What is the chaff H8401 to the wheat? H1250 saith H5002 the LORD. H3068
Then H116 was the secret H7328 revealed H1541 unto Daniel H1841 in a night H3916 vision. H2376 Then H116 Daniel H1841 blessed H1289 the God H426 of heaven. H8065 Daniel H1841 answered H6032 and said, H560 Blessed H1289 be H1934 the name H8036 of God H426 for H4481 ever H5957 and ever: H5705 H5957 for wisdom H2452 and might H1370 are H1932 his: And he changeth H8133 the times H5732 and the seasons: H2166 he removeth H5709 kings, H4430 and setteth up H6966 kings: H4430 he giveth H3052 wisdom H2452 unto the wise, H2445 and knowledge H4486 to them that know H3046 understanding: H999 He revealeth H1541 the deep H5994 and secret things: H5642 he knoweth H3046 what H4101 is in the darkness, H2816 and the light H5094 dwelleth H8271 with him. H5974 I H576 thank H3029 thee, and praise H7624 thee, O thou God H426 of my fathers, H2 who hast given H3052 me wisdom H2452 and might, H1370 and hast made known H3046 unto me now H3705 what we desired H1156 of thee: H4481 for thou hast now made known H3046 unto us the king's H4430 matter. H4406
But as for me, H576 this H1836 secret H7328 is not H3809 revealed H1541 to me for any wisdom H2452 that I have H383 more than H4481 any H3606 living, H2417 but H3861 for their sakes H1701 that H5922 shall make known H3046 the interpretation H6591 to the king, H4430 and that thou mightest know H3046 the thoughts H7476 of thy heart. H3825
Forasmuch as H6903 H3606 an excellent H3493 spirit, H7308 and knowledge, H4486 and understanding, H7924 interpreting H6590 of dreams, H2493 and shewing H263 of hard sentences, H280 and dissolving H8271 of doubts, H7001 were found H7912 in the same Daniel, H1841 whom the king H4430 named H7761 H8036 Belteshazzar: H1096 now H3705 let Daniel H1841 be called, H7123 and he will shew H2324 the interpretation. Commentary on Genesis 40 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 40
In this chapter things are working, though slowly, towards Joseph's advancement.
Gen 40:1-4
We should not have had this story of Pharaoh's butler and baker recorded in scripture if it had not been serviceable to Joseph's preferment. The world stands for the sake of the church, and is governed for its good. Observe,
Gen 40:5-19
Observe,
Gen 40:20-23
Here is,
Some observe the resemblance between Joseph and Christ in this story. Joseph's fellow-sufferers were like the two thieves that were crucified with Christ-the one saved, the other condemned. (It is Dr. Lightfoot's remark, from Mr. Broughton.) One of these, when Joseph said to him, Remember me when it shall be well with thee, forget him; but one of those, when he said to Christ, Remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom, was not forgotten. We justly blame the chief butler's ingratitude to Joseph, yet we conduct ourselves much more disingenuously towards the Lord Jesus. Joseph had but foretold the chief butler's enlargement, but Christ wrought out ours, mediated with the King of kings for us; yet we forget him, though often reminded of him, though we have promised never to forget him: thus ill do we requite him, like foolish people and unwise.
