4 Yet let no man H376 strive, H7378 nor reprove H3198 another: H376 for thy people H5971 are as they that strive H7378 with the priest. H3548
And the man H376 that will do H6213 presumptuously, H2087 and will not hearken H8085 unto the priest H3548 that standeth H5975 to minister H8334 there before the LORD H3068 thy God, H430 or unto the judge, H8199 even that man H376 shall die: H4191 and thou shalt put away H1197 the evil H7451 from Israel. H3478
Ephraim H669 is joined H2266 to idols: H6091 let him alone. H3240
Then said H559 they, Come, H3212 and let us devise H2803 devices H4284 against Jeremiah; H3414 for the law H8451 shall not perish H6 from the priest, H3548 nor counsel H6098 from the wise, H2450 nor the word H1697 from the prophet. H5030 Come, H3212 and let us smite H5221 him with the tongue, H3956 and let us not give heed H7181 to any of his words. H1697
And I will make thy tongue H3956 cleave H1692 to the roof of thy mouth, H2441 that thou shalt be dumb, H481 and shalt not be to them a reprover: H376 H3198 for they are a rebellious H4805 house. H1004
And a man's uncle H1730 shall take him up, H5375 and he that burneth H5635 him, to bring out H3318 the bones H6106 out of the house, H1004 and shall say H559 unto him that is by the sides H3411 of the house, H1004 Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, H559 No. H657 Then shall he say, H559 Hold thy tongue: H2013 for we may not make mention H2142 of the name H8034 of the LORD. H3068
And G1161 why G5101 beholdest G991 thou the mote G2595 that is in G1722 thy G4675 brother's G80 eye, G3788 but G1161 considerest G2657 not G3756 the beam G1385 that is in G1722 thine own G4674 eye? G3788 Or G2228 how G4459 wilt thou say G2046 to thy G4675 brother, G80 Let G863 me pull out G1544 the mote G2595 out of G575 thine G4675 eye; G3788 and, G2532 behold, G2400 a beam G1385 is in G1722 thine own G4675 eye? G3788 Thou hypocrite, G5273 first G4412 cast out G1544 the beam G1385 out of G1537 thine own G4675 eye; G3788 and G2532 then G5119 shalt thou see clearly G1227 to cast out G1544 the mote G2595 out of G1537 thy G4675 brother's G80 eye. G3788 Give G1325 not G3361 that which G3588 is holy G40 unto the dogs, G2965 neither G3366 cast G906 ye your G5216 pearls G3135 before G1715 swine, G5519 lest G3379 they trample G2662 them G846 under G1722 their G846 feet, G4228 and G2532 turn again G4762 and rend G4486 you. Commentary on Hosea 4 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 4
Prophets were sent to be reprovers, to tell people of their faults, and to warn them of the judgments of God, to which by sin they exposed themselves; so the prophet is employed in this and the following chapters. He is here, as counsel for the King of kings, opening an indictment against the people of Israel, and labouring to convince them of sin, and of their misery and danger because of sin, that he might prevail with them to repent and reform.
Hsa 4:1-5
Here is,
Hsa 4:6-11
God is here proceeding in his controversy both with the priests and with the people. The people were as those that strove with the priests (v. 4) when they had priests that did their duty; but the generality of them lived in the neglect of their duty, and here is a word for those priests, and for the people that love to have it so, Jer. 5:31. And it is observable here how the punishment answers to the sin, and how, for the justifying of his own proceedings, God sets the one over-against the other.
Hsa 4:12-19
