18 For G1063 thou hast had G2192 five G4002 husbands; G435 and G2532 he whom G3739 thou G2192 now G3568 hast G2192 is G2076 not G3756 thy G4675 husband: G435 in that G5124 saidst thou G2046 truly. G227
But God H430 came H935 to Abimelech H40 in a dream H2472 by night, H3915 and said H559 to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, H4191 for the woman H802 which thou hast taken; H3947 for she is a man's H1167 wife. H1166
And when Shechem H7927 the son H1121 of Hamor H2544 the Hivite, H2340 prince H5387 of the country, H776 saw H7200 her, he took H3947 her, and lay H7901 with her, and defiled her. H6031
And the sons H1121 of Jacob H3290 came H935 out of the field H7704 when they heard H8085 it: and the men H582 were grieved, H6087 and they were very H3966 wroth, H2734 because he had wrought H6213 folly H5039 in Israel H3478 in lying H7901 with Jacob's H3290 daughter; H1323 which thing ought not to be done. H6213 And Hamor H2544 communed H1696 with them, saying, H559 The soul H5315 of my son H1121 Shechem H7927 longeth H2836 for your daughter: H1323 I pray you give H5414 her him to wife. H802
And they said, H559 Should he deal H6213 with our sister H269 as with an harlot? H2181
This is the law H8451 of jealousies, H7068 when a wife H802 goeth aside H7847 to another instead of her husband, H376 and is defiled; H2930
Moreover Ruth H7327 the Moabitess, H4125 the wife H802 of Mahlon, H4248 have I purchased H7069 to be my wife, H802 to raise up H6965 the name H8034 of the dead H4191 upon his inheritance, H5159 that the name H8034 of the dead H4191 be not cut off H3772 from among H5973 his brethren, H251 and from the gate H8179 of his place: H4725 ye are witnesses H5707 this day. H3117
Surely H403 as a wife H802 treacherously H898 departeth from her husband, H7453 so have ye dealt treacherously H898 with me, O house H1004 of Israel, H3478 saith H5002 the LORD. H3068
So then G686 G3767 if, G1437 while her husband G435 liveth, G2198 she be married G1096 to another G2087 man, G435 she shall be called G5537 an adulteress: G3428 but G1161 if G1437 her husband G435 be dead, G599 she is G2076 free G1658 from G575 that law; G3551 so that she G846 is G1511 no G3361 adulteress, G3428 though she be married G1096 to another G2087 man. G435
And G1161 unto the married G1060 I command, G3853 yet not G3756 I, G1473 but G235 the Lord, G2962 Let G5563 not G3361 the wife G1135 depart G5563 from G575 her husband: G435 But G1161 and G2532 if G1437 she depart, G5563 let her remain G3306 unmarried, G22 or G2228 be reconciled G2644 to her husband: G435 and G2532 let G863 not G3361 the husband G435 put away G863 his wife. Commentary on John 4 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 4
It was, more than any thing else, the glory of the land of Israel, that it was Emmanuel's land (Isa. 8:8), not only the place of his birth, but the scene of his preaching and miracles. This land in our Saviour's time was divided into three parts: Judea in the south, Galilee in the north, and Samaria lying between them. Now, in this chapter, we have Christ in each of these three parts of that land.
Jhn 4:1-3
We read of Christ's coming into Judea (ch. 3:22), after he had kept the feast at Jerusalem; and now he left Judea four months before harvest, as is said here (v. 35); so that it is computed that he staid in Judea about six months, to build upon the foundation John had laid there. We have no particular account of his sermons and miracles there, only in general, v. 1.
Jhn 4:4-26
We have here an account of the good Christ did in Samaria, when he passed through that country in his way to Galilee. The Samaritans, both in blood and religion, were mongrel Jews, the posterity of those colonies which the king of Assyria planted there after the captivity of the ten tribes, with whom the poor of the land that were left behind, and many other Jews afterwards, incorporated themselves. They worshipped the God of Israel only, to whom they erected a temple on mount Gerizim, in competition with that at Jerusalem. There was great enmity between them and the Jews; the Samaritans would not admit Christ, when they saw he was going to Jerusalem (Lu. 9:53); the Jews thought they could not give him a worse name than to say, He is a Samaritan. When the Jews were in prosperity, the Samaritans claimed kindred to them (Ezra 4:2), but, when the Jews were in distress, they were Medes and Persians; see Joseph. Antiq. 11.340-341; 12.257. We have here the remainder of the story of what happened when Christ was in Samaria, after the long conference he had with the woman.
