5 Wilt thou set H5774 H5774 thine eyes H5869 upon that which is not? for riches certainly H6213 make H6213 themselves wings; H3671 they fly away H5774 H5774 as an eagle H5404 toward heaven. H8064
And there came H935 a messenger H4397 unto Job, H347 and said, H559 The oxen H1241 were plowing, H2790 and the asses H860 feeding H7462 beside H3027 them: And the Sabeans H7614 fell H5307 upon them, and took them away; H3947 yea, they have slain H5221 the servants H5288 with the edge H6310 of the sword; H2719 and I only am escaped H4422 alone to tell H5046 thee. While he was yet speaking, H1696 there came H935 also another, and said, H559 The fire H784 of God H430 is fallen H5307 from heaven, H8064 and hath burned up H1197 the sheep, H6629 and the servants, H5288 and consumed H398 them; and I only am escaped H4422 alone to tell H5046 thee. While he was yet speaking, H1696 there came H935 also another, and said, H559 The Chaldeans H3778 made out H7760 three H7969 bands, H7218 and fell H6584 upon the camels, H1581 and have carried them away, H3947 yea, and slain H5221 the servants H5288 with the edge H6310 of the sword; H2719 and I only am escaped H4422 alone to tell H5046 thee.
Incline H5186 my heart H3820 unto thy testimonies, H5715 and not to covetousness. H1215 Turn away H5674 mine eyes H5869 from beholding H7200 vanity; H7723 and quicken H2421 thou me in thy way. H1870
There is H3426 a sore H2470 evil H7451 which I have seen H7200 under the sun, H8121 namely, riches H6239 kept H8104 for the owners H1167 thereof to their hurt. H7451 But those riches H6239 perish H6 by evil H7451 travail: H6045 and he begetteth H3205 a son, H1121 and there is nothing H3972 in his hand. H3027
But G1161 this G5124 I say, G5346 brethren, G80 the time G2540 is short: G4958 it remaineth, G2076 G3063 that G2443 both G2532 they that have G2192 wives G1135 be G5600 as though G5613 they had G2192 none; G3361 And G2532 they that weep, G2799 as G5613 though they wept G2799 not; G3361 and G2532 they that rejoice, G5463 as G5613 though they rejoiced G5463 not; G3361 and G2532 they that buy, G59 as G5613 though they possessed G2722 not; G3361 And G2532 they that use G5530 this G5127 world, G2889 as G5613 not G3361 abusing G2710 it: for G1063 the fashion G4976 of this G5129 world G2889 passeth away. Chapter 23
Pro 23:1-3
The sin we are here warned against is luxury and sensuality, and the indulgence of the appetite in eating and drinking, a sin that most easily besets us.
Pro 23:4-5
As some are given to appetite (v. 2) so others to covetousness, and those Solomon here takes to task. Men cheat themselves as much by setting their hearts on money (though it seems most substantial) as by setting them on dainties. Observe,
Pro 23:6-8
Those that are voluptuous and given to appetite (v. 2) are glad to be where there is good cheer stirring, and those that are covetous and saving, that they may spare at home, will be glad to get a dinner at another man's table; and therefore both are here advised not to be forward to accept of every man's invitation, but especially not to thrust themselves in uninvited. Observe,
Pro 23:9
We are here directed not to cast pearls before swine (Mt. 7:6) and not to expose things sacred to the contempt and ridicule of profane scoffers. It is our duty to take all fit occasions to speak of divine things; but,

Here is good advice for parents to give to their children; words are put into their mouths, that they may train them up in the way they should go. Here we have,

Solomon here gives fair warning against the sin of drunkenness, to confirm what he had said, v. 20.
