2 And David perceived that Jehovah had established him king over Israel, for his kingdom was highly exalted, because of his people Israel.
Water shall flow out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in great waters, And his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.
And now, thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: I took thee from the pasture-grounds, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people, over Israel;
Blessed be Jehovah thy God, who delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel! Because Jehovah loves Israel for ever, therefore did he make thee king, to do judgment and justice.
And this hath been a small thing in thy sight, O God; and thou hast spoken of thy servant's house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the rank of a man of high degree, Jehovah Elohim.
For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there arise relief and deliverance to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall perish. And who knows whether thou art [not] come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him: With whom my hand shall be established; and mine arm shall strengthen him. No enemy shall exact upon him, nor the son of wickedness afflict him; But I will beat down his adversaries before his face, and will smite them that hate him. And my faithfulness and my loving-kindness shall be with him, and by my name shall his horn be exalted. And I will set his hand in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers. *He* shall call unto me, Thou art my father, my ùGod, and the rock of my salvation; And as to me, I will make him firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. My loving-kindness will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him; And I will establish his seed for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven. If his sons forsake my law, and walk not in mine ordinances; If they profane my statutes, and keep not my commandments: Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless my loving-kindness will I not utterly take from him, nor belie my faithfulness; My covenant will I not profane, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness; I will not lie unto David: His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me; It shall be established for ever as the moon, and the witness in the sky is firm. Selah.
And I will turn my hand upon thee, and will thoroughly purge away thy dross, and take away all thine alloy; and I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning. Afterwards thou shalt be called, Town of righteousness, Faithful city. Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and they that return of her with righteousness.

This chapter gives an account of the message of Hiram king of Tyre to David, and of David's taking him more wives, with the names of his children by them; and of two battles he fought with the Philistines, in which he had the victory over them; the same are recorded in 2 Samuel 5:11 see the notes there; See Gill on 2 Samuel 5:11.
