2 And G1161 I went up G305 by G2596 revelation, G602 and G2532 communicated G394 unto them G846 that gospel G2098 which G3739 I preach G2784 among G1722 the Gentiles, G1484 but G1161 privately G2596 G2398 to them which were of reputation, G1380 lest by any means G3381 G4458 I should run, G5143 or G2228 had run, G5143 in G1519 vain. G2756
Holding forth G1907 the word G3056 of life; G2222 that G1519 I G1698 may rejoice G2745 in G1519 the day G2250 of Christ, G5547 that G3754 I have G5143 not G3756 run G5143 in G1519 vain, G2756 neither G3761 laboured G2872 in G1519 vain. G2756
And G2532 when James, G2385 G2532 Cephas, G2786 and G2532 John, G2491 who G3588 seemed G1380 to be G1511 pillars, G4769 perceived G1097 the grace G5485 that was given G1325 unto me, G3427 they gave G1325 to me G1698 and G2532 Barnabas G921 the right hands G1188 of fellowship; G2842 that G2443 we G2249 should go unto G1519 the heathen, G1484 and G1161 they G846 unto G1519 the circumcision. G4061
For this G5124 cause, G1223 when I G2504 could G4722 no longer G3371 forbear, G4722 I sent G3992 to G1519 know G1097 your G5216 faith, G4102 lest by some means G3381 G4458 the tempter G3985 have tempted G3985 you, G5209 and G2532 our G2257 labour G2873 be G1096 in G1519 vain. G2756
But G1161 of G575 these who seemed G1380 to be G1511 somewhat, G5100 (whatsoever G3697 G4218 they were, G2258 it maketh G1308 no G3762 matter G1308 to me: G3427 God G2316 accepteth G2983 no G3756 man's G444 person:) G4383 for G1063 they who seemed G1380 to be somewhat in conference added G4323 nothing G3762 to me: G1698
For G1063 I determined G2919 not G3756 to know G1492 any thing G5100 among G1722 you, G5213 save G1508 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 and G2532 him G5126 crucified. G4717
But G1161 we G2249 preach G2784 Christ G5547 crucified, G4717 unto the Jews G2453 a stumblingblock, G3303 G4625 and G1161 unto the Greeks G1672 foolishness; G3472
Receive G4327 him G846 therefore G3767 in G1722 the Lord G2962 with G3326 all G3956 gladness; G5479 and G2532 hold G2192 such G5108 in reputation: G1784
And G1161 the night G3571 following G1966 the Lord G2962 stood by G2186 him, G846 and said, G2036 Be of good cheer, G2293 Paul: G3972 for G1063 as G5613 thou hast testified G1263 of G4012 me G1700 in G1519 Jerusalem, G2419 so G3779 must G1163 thou G4571 bear witness G3140 also G2532 at G1519 Rome. G4516
Then G1161 spake G2036 the Lord G2962 to Paul G3972 in G1223 the night G3571 by G1722 a vision, G3705 Be G5399 not G3361 afraid, G5399 but G235 speak, G2980 and G2532 hold G4623 not G3361 thy peace: G4623
Then G1161 stood there up G450 one G5100 in G1722 the council, G4892 a Pharisee, G5330 named G3686 Gamaliel, G1059 a doctor of the law, G3547 had in reputation G5093 among all G3956 the people, G2992 and commanded G2753 to put G4160 the apostles G652 forth G1854 a G5100 little space; G1024
Behold, G2400 I G1473 send G649 you G5209 forth G649 as G5613 sheep G4263 in G1722 the midst G3319 of wolves: G3074 be ye G1096 therefore G3767 wise G5429 as G5613 serpents, G3789 and G2532 harmless G185 as G5613 doves. G4058
Dead H4194 flies H2070 cause the ointment H8081 of the apothecary H7543 to send forth H5042 a stinking savour: H887 so doth a little H4592 folly H5531 him that is in reputation H3368 for wisdom H2451 and honour. H3519
And G2532 a vision G3705 appeared G3700 to Paul G3972 in G1223 the night; G3571 There stood G2258 G2476 a man G5100 G435 of Macedonia, G3110 and prayed G3870 him, G846 G2532 saying, G3004 Come over G1224 into G1519 Macedonia, G3109 and help G997 us. G2254 And G1161 after G5613 he had seen G1492 the vision, G3705 immediately G2112 we endeavoured G2212 to go G1831 into G1519 Macedonia, G3109 assuredly gathering G4822 that G3754 the Lord G2962 had called G4341 us G2248 for to preach the gospel G2097 unto them. Commentary on Galatians 2 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 2
The apostle, in this chapter, continues the relation of his past life and conduct, which he had begun in the former; and, by some further instances of what had passed between him and the other apostles, makes it appear that he was not beholden to them either for his knowledge of the gospel or his authority as an apostle, as his adversaries would insinuate; but, on the contrary, that he was owned and approved even by them, as having an equal commission with them to this office.
Gal 2:1-10
It should seem, by the account Paul gives of himself in this chapter, that, from the very first preaching and planting of Christianity, there was a difference of apprehension between those Christians who had first been Jews and those who had first been Gentiles. Many of those who had first been Jews retained a regard to the ceremonial law, and strove to keep up the reputation of that; but those who had first been Gentiles had no regard to the law of Moses, but took pure Christianity as perfective of natural religion, and resolved to adhere to that. Peter was the apostle to them; and the ceremonial law, though dead with Christ, yet not being as yet buried, he connived at the respect kept up for it. But Paul was the apostle of the Gentiles; and, though he was a Hebrew of the Hebrews, yet he adhered to pure Christianity. Now in this chapter he tells us what passed between him and the other apostles, and particularly between him and Peter hereupon.
In these verses he informs us of another journey which he took to Jerusalem, and of what passed between him and the other apostles there, v. 1-10. Here he acquaints us,
