11 He that loveth H157 pureness H2890 H2889 of heart, H3820 for the grace H2580 of his lips H8193 the king H4428 shall be his friend. H7453
And Pharaoh H6547 said H559 unto Joseph, H3130 Forasmuch H310 as God H430 hath shewed H3045 thee all this, there is none so discreet H995 and wise H2450 as thou art: Thou shalt be H1961 over my house, H1004 and according unto thy word H6310 shall all my people H5971 be ruled: H5401 only in the throne H3678 will I be greater H1431 than thou. And Pharaoh H6547 said H559 unto Joseph, H3130 See, H7200 I have set H5414 thee over all the land H776 of Egypt. H4714 And Pharaoh H6547 took off H5493 his ring H2885 from his hand, H3027 and put H5414 it upon Joseph's H3130 hand, H3027 and arrayed H3847 him in vestures H899 of fine linen, H8336 and put H7760 a gold H2091 chain H7242 about his neck; H6677 And he made him to ride H7392 in the second H4932 chariot H4818 which he had; and they cried H7121 before him, H6440 Bow the knee: H86 and he made H5414 him ruler over all the land H776 of Egypt. H4714 And Pharaoh H6547 said H559 unto Joseph, H3130 I am Pharaoh, H6547 and without H1107 thee shall no man H376 lift up H7311 his hand H3027 or foot H7272 in all the land H776 of Egypt. H4714 And Pharaoh H6547 called H7121 Joseph's H3130 name H8034 Zaphnathpaaneah; H6847 and he gave H5414 him to wife H802 Asenath H621 the daughter H1323 of Potipherah H6319 priest H3548 of On. H204 And Joseph H3130 went out H3318 over all the land H776 of Egypt. H4714 And Joseph H3130 was thirty H7970 years H8141 old H1121 when he stood H5975 before H6440 Pharaoh H6547 king H4428 of Egypt. H4714 And Joseph H3130 went out H3318 from the presence H6440 of Pharaoh, H6547 and went throughout H5674 all the land H776 of Egypt. H4714 And in the seven H7651 plenteous H7647 years H8141 the earth H776 brought forth H6213 by handfuls. H7062 And he gathered up H6908 all the food H400 of the seven H7651 years, H8141 which were in the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 and laid up H5414 the food H400 in the cities: H5892 the food H400 of the field, H7704 which was round about H5439 every city, H5892 laid he up H5414 in the same. H8432 And Joseph H3130 gathered H6651 corn H1250 as the sand H2344 of the sea, H3220 very H3966 much, H7235 until he left H2308 numbering; H5608 for it was without H369 number. H4557 And unto Joseph H3130 were born H3205 two H8147 sons H1121 before the years H8141 of famine H7458 came, H935 which Asenath H621 the daughter H1323 of Potipherah H6319 priest H3548 of On H204 bare H3205 unto him. And Joseph H3130 called H7121 the name H8034 of the firstborn H1060 Manasseh: H4519 For God, H430 said he, hath made me forget H5382 all my toil, H5999 and all my father's H1 house. H1004 And the name H8034 of the second H8145 called H7121 he Ephraim: H669 For God H430 hath caused me to be fruitful H6509 in the land H776 of my affliction. H6040 And the seven H7651 years H8141 of plenteousness, H7647 that was in the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 were ended. H3615 And the seven H7651 years H8141 of dearth H7458 began H2490 to come, H935 according as Joseph H3130 had said: H559 and the dearth H7458 was in all lands; H776 but in all the land H776 of Egypt H4714 there was bread. H3899 And when all the land H776 of Egypt H4714 was famished, H7456 the people H5971 cried H6817 to Pharaoh H6547 for bread: H3899 and Pharaoh H6547 said H559 unto all the Egyptians, H4714 Go H3212 unto Joseph; H3130 what he saith H559 to you, do. H6213 And the famine H7458 was over all the face H6440 of the earth: H776 And Joseph H3130 opened H6605 all the storehouses, and sold H7666 unto the Egyptians; H4714 and the famine H7458 waxed sore H2388 in the land H776 of Egypt. H4714 And all countries H776 came H935 into Egypt H4714 to Joseph H3130 for to buy H7666 corn; because that the famine H7458 was so sore H2388 in all lands. H776
This Ezra H5830 went up H5927 from Babylon; H894 and he was a ready H4106 scribe H5608 in the law H8451 of Moses, H4872 which the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478 had given: H5414 and the king H4428 granted H5414 him all his request, H1246 according to the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068 his God H430 upon him. And there went up H5927 some of the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 and of the priests, H3548 and the Levites, H3881 and the singers, H7891 and the porters, H7778 and the Nethinims, H5411 unto Jerusalem, H3389 in the seventh H7651 year H8141 of Artaxerxes H783 the king. H4428 And he came H935 to Jerusalem H3389 in the fifth H2549 month, H2320 which was in the seventh H7637 year H8141 of the king. H4428 For upon the first H259 day of the first H7223 month H2320 began H3246 he to go up H4609 from Babylon, H894 and on the first H259 day of the fifth H2549 month H2320 came H935 he to Jerusalem, H3389 according to the good H2896 hand H3027 of his God H430 upon him. For Ezra H5830 had prepared H3559 his heart H3824 to seek H1875 the law H8451 of the LORD, H3068 and to do H6213 it, and to teach H3925 in Israel H3478 statutes H2706 and judgments. H4941 Now this is the copy H6572 of the letter H5406 that the king H4428 Artaxerxes H783 gave H5414 unto Ezra H5830 the priest, H3548 the scribe, H5608 even a scribe H5608 of the words H1697 of the commandments H4687 of the LORD, H3068 and of his statutes H2706 to Israel. H3478
Then the king H4428 said H559 unto me, For what dost thou make request? H1245 So I prayed H6419 to the God H430 of heaven. H8064 And I said H559 unto the king, H4428 If it please H2895 the king, H4428 and if thy servant H5650 have found favour H3190 in thy sight, H6440 that thou wouldest send H7971 me unto Judah, H3063 unto the city H5892 of my fathers' H1 sepulchres, H6913 that I may build H1129 it. And the king H4428 said H559 unto me, (the queen H7694 also sitting H3427 by him,) H681 For how long shall thy journey H4109 be? and when wilt thou return? H7725 So it pleased H3190 H6440 the king H4428 to send H7971 me; and I set H5414 him a time. H2165
Then H116 the king H4430 Nebuchadnezzar H5020 fell H5308 upon H5922 his face, H600 and worshipped H5457 Daniel, H1841 and commanded H560 that they should offer H5260 an oblation H4504 and sweet odours H5208 unto him. The king H4430 answered H6032 unto Daniel, H1841 and said, H560 Of H4481 a truth H7187 it is, that H1768 your God H426 is a God H426 of gods, H426 and a Lord H4756 of kings, H4430 and a revealer H1541 of secrets, H7328 seeing thou couldest H3202 reveal H1541 this H1836 secret. H7328 Then H116 the king H4430 made H7236 Daniel H1841 a great man, H7236 and gave H3052 him many H7690 great H7260 gifts, H4978 and made him ruler H7981 over H5922 the whole H3606 province H4083 of Babylon, H895 and chief H7229 of the governors H5460 over H5922 all H3606 the wise H2445 men of Babylon. H895 Then Daniel H1841 requested H1156 of H4481 the king, H4430 and he set H4483 Shadrach, H7715 Meshach, H4336 and Abednego, H5665 over H5922 the affairs H5673 of the province H4083 of Babylon: H895 but Daniel H1841 sat in the gate H8651 of the king. H4430
And when he came H7127 to the den, H1358 he cried H2200 with a lamentable H6088 voice H7032 unto Daniel: H1841 and the king H4430 spake H6032 and said H560 to Daniel, H1841 O Daniel, H1841 servant H5649 of the living H2417 God, H426 is thy God, H426 whom thou servest H6399 continually, H8411 able H3202 to deliver H7804 thee from H4481 the lions? H744 Then H116 said H4449 Daniel H1841 unto H5974 the king, H4430 O king, H4430 live H2418 for ever. H5957 My God H426 hath sent H7972 his angel, H4398 and hath shut H5463 the lions' H744 mouths, H6433 that they have not H3809 hurt H2255 me: forasmuch as H3606 H6903 before H6925 him innocency H2136 was found H7912 in me; and also H638 before H6925 thee, O king, H4430 have I done H5648 no H3809 hurt. H2248 Then H116 was the king H4430 exceeding H7690 glad H2868 for him, H5922 and commanded H560 that they should take H5267 Daniel H1841 up H5267 out of H4481 the den. H1358 So Daniel H1841 was taken up H5267 out of H4481 the den, H1358 and no H3809 manner H3606 of hurt H2257 was found H7912 upon him, because he believed H540 in his God. H426

Here are two things which are more valuable and which we should covet more than great riches:-

He had said (v. 2.), Rich and poor meet together; but here he finds, here he shows, that, as to the things of this life, there is a great difference; for,

This is designed to warn all young men against the lusts of uncleanness. As they regard the welfare of their souls, let them take heed of strange women, lewd women, whom they ought to be strange to, of the mouth of strange women, of the kisses of their lips (ch. 7:13), of the words of their lips, their charms and enticements. Dread them; have nothing to do with them; for,
Pro 22:15
We have here two very sad considerations:-
Pro 22:16
This shows what evil courses rich men sometimes take, by which, in the end, they will impoverish themselves and provoke God, notwithstanding their abundance, to bring them to want; they oppress the poor and give to the rich.
Pro 22:17-21
Solomon here changes his style and manner of speaking. Hitherto, for the most part, since the beginning of ch. 10, he had laid down doctrinal truths, and but now and then dropped a word of exhortation, leaving us to make the application as we went along; but here, to the end of ch. 24, he directs his speech to his son, his pupil, his reader, his hearer, speaking as to a particular person. Hitherto, for the most part, his sense was comprised in one verse, but here usually it is drawn out further. See how Wisdom tries variety of methods with us, lest we should be cloyed with any one. To awaken attention and to assist our application the method of direct address is here adopted. Ministers must not think it enough to preach before their hearers, but must preach to them, nor enough to preach to them all in general, but should address themselves to particular persons, as here: Do thou do so and so. After this solemn preface, one would have expected something new and surprising; but no; here is a plain and common, but very needful caution against the barbarous and inhuman practices of oppressing poor people. Observe,
