1 How doth the city H5892 sit H3427 solitary, H910 that was full H7227 of people! H5971 how is she become as a widow! H490 she that was great H7227 among the nations, H1471 and princess H8282 among the provinces, H4082 how is she become tributary! H4522
And her gates H6607 shall lament H578 and mourn; H56 and she being desolate H5352 shall sit H3427 upon the ground. H776
There have been H1934 mighty H8624 kings H4430 also over H5922 Jerusalem, H3390 which have ruled H7990 over all H3606 countries beyond H5675 the river; H5103 and toll, H4061 tribute, H1093 and custom, H1983 was paid H3052 unto them.
And G2532 saying, G3004 Alas, G3759 alas, G3759 that great G3173 city, G4172 that was clothed in G4016 fine linen, G1039 and G2532 purple, G4210 and G2532 scarlet, G2847 and G2532 decked G5558 with G1722 gold, G5557 and G2532 precious G5093 stones, G3037 and G2532 pearls! G3135 For G3754 in one G3391 hour G5610 so great G5118 riches G4149 is come to nought. G2049 And G2532 every G3956 shipmaster, G2942 and G2532 all G3956 the company G3658 in G1909 ships, G4143 and G2532 sailors, G3492 and G2532 as many as G3745 trade G2038 by sea, G2281 stood G2476 afar G3113 off, G575
The crown H5850 is fallen H5307 from our head: H7218 woe H188 unto us, that we have sinned! H2398
Thou that art full H4392 of stirs, H8663 a tumultuous H1993 city, H5892 a joyous H5947 city: H7151 thy slain H2491 men are not slain H2491 with the sword, H2719 nor dead H4191 in battle. H4421
And Jehoiakim H3079 gave H5414 the silver H3701 and the gold H2091 to Pharaoh; H6547 but he taxed H6186 the land H776 to give H5414 the money H3701 according to the commandment H6310 of Pharaoh: H6547 he exacted H5065 the silver H3701 and the gold H2091 of the people H5971 of the land, H776 of every one H376 according to his taxation, H6187 to give H5414 it unto Pharaohnechoh. H6549
The elders H2205 of the daughter H1323 of Zion H6726 sit H3427 upon the ground, H776 and keep silence: H1826 they have cast up H5927 dust H6083 upon their heads; H7218 they have girded H2296 themselves with sackcloth: H8242 the virgins H1330 of Jerusalem H3389 hang down H3381 their heads H7218 to the ground. H776
How much G3745 she hath glorified G1392 herself, G1438 and G2532 lived deliciously, G4763 so much G5118 torment G929 and G2532 sorrow G3997 give G1325 her: G846 for G3754 she saith G3004 in G1722 her G846 heart, G2588 I sit G2521 a queen, G938 and G2532 am G1510 no G3756 widow, G5503 and G2532 shall see G1492 no G3364 sorrow. G3997
Thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts; H6635 There shall yet old men H2205 and old women H2205 dwell H3427 in the streets H7339 of Jerusalem, H3389 and every man H376 with his staff H4938 in his hand H3027 for very H7230 age. H3117 And the streets H7339 of the city H5892 shall be full H4390 of boys H3206 and girls H3207 playing H7832 in the streets H7339 thereof.
This is the rejoicing H5947 city H5892 that dwelt H3427 carelessly, H983 that said H559 in her heart, H3824 I am, and there is none beside H657 me: how is she become a desolation, H8047 a place for beasts H2416 to lie down in! H4769 every one that passeth by H5674 her shall hiss, H8319 and wag H5128 his hand. H3027
Then all the princes H5387 of the sea H3220 shall come down H3381 from their thrones, H3678 and lay away H5493 their robes, H4598 and put off H6584 their broidered H7553 garments: H899 they shall clothe H3847 themselves with trembling; H2731 they shall sit H3427 upon the ground, H776 and shall tremble H2729 at every moment, H7281 and be astonished H8074 at thee.
How is the gold H2091 become dim! H6004 how is the most H2896 fine gold H3800 changed! H8132 the stones H68 of the sanctuary H6944 are poured out H8210 in the top H7218 of every street. H2351
How hath the Lord H136 covered H5743 the daughter H1323 of Zion H6726 with a cloud H5743 in his anger, H639 and cast down H7993 from heaven H8064 unto the earth H776 the beauty H8597 of Israel, H3478 and remembered H2142 not his footstool H1916 H7272 in the day H3117 of his anger! H639
How is the hammer H6360 of the whole earth H776 cut asunder H1438 and broken! H7665 how is Babylon H894 become a desolation H8047 among the nations! H1471
And Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 the son H1121 of Shaphan H8227 sware H7650 unto them and to their men, H582 saying, H559 Fear H3372 not to serve H5647 the Chaldeans: H3778 dwell in H3427 the land, H776 and serve H5647 the king H4428 of Babylon, H894 and it shall be well H3190 with you.
How beautiful H4998 upon the mountains H2022 are the feet H7272 of him that bringeth good tidings, H1319 that publisheth H8085 peace; H7965 that bringeth good tidings H1319 of good, H2896 that publisheth H8085 salvation; H3444 that saith H559 unto Zion, H6726 Thy God H430 reigneth! H4427
Shake H5287 thyself from the dust; H6083 arise, H6965 and sit down, H3427 O Jerusalem: H3389 loose H6605 thyself from the bands H4147 of thy neck, H6677 O captive H7628 daughter H1323 of Zion. H6726
Come down, H3381 and sit H3427 in the dust, H6083 O virgin H1330 daughter H1323 of Babylon, H894 sit H3427 on the ground: H776 there is no throne, H3678 O daughter H1323 of the Chaldeans: H3778 for thou shalt no more H3254 be called H7121 tender H7390 and delicate. H6028 Take H3947 the millstones, H7347 and grind H2912 meal: H7058 uncover H1540 thy locks, H6777 make bare H2834 the leg, H7640 uncover H1540 the thigh, H7785 pass over H5674 the rivers. H5104 Thy nakedness H6172 shall be uncovered, H1540 yea, thy shame H2781 shall be seen: H7200 I will take H3947 vengeance, H5359 and I will not meet H6293 thee as a man. H120 As for our redeemer, H1350 the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 is his name, H8034 the Holy One H6918 of Israel. H3478 Sit H3427 thou silent, H1748 and get H935 thee into darkness, H2822 O daughter H1323 of the Chaldeans: H3778 for thou shalt no more H3254 be called, H7121 The lady H1404 of kingdoms. H4467 I was wroth H7107 with my people, H5971 I have polluted H2490 mine inheritance, H5159 and given H5414 them into thine hand: H3027 thou didst shew H7760 them no mercy; H7356 upon the ancient H2205 hast thou very H3966 heavily H3513 laid thy yoke. H5923 And thou saidst, H559 I shall be a lady H1404 for ever: H5769 so that thou didst not lay H7760 these things to thy heart, H3820 neither didst remember H2142 the latter end H319 of it. Therefore hear H8085 now this, thou that art given to pleasures, H5719 that dwellest H3427 carelessly, H983 that sayest H559 in thine heart, H3824 I am, and none else H657 beside me; I shall not sit H3427 as a widow, H490 neither shall I know H3045 the loss of children: H7908 But these two H8147 things shall come H935 to thee in a moment H7281 in one H259 day, H3117 the loss of children, H7908 and widowhood: H489 they shall come H935 upon thee in their perfection H8537 for the multitude H7230 of thy sorceries, H3785 and for the great H3966 abundance H6109 of thine enchantments. H2267 For thou hast trusted H982 in thy wickedness: H7451 thou hast said, H559 None seeth H7200 me. Thy wisdom H2451 and thy knowledge, H1847 it hath perverted H7725 thee; and thou hast said H559 in thine heart, H3820 I am, and none else H657 beside me. Therefore shall evil H7451 come H935 upon thee; thou shalt not know H3045 from whence it riseth: H7837 and mischief H1943 shall fall H5307 upon thee; thou shalt not be able H3201 to put it off: H3722 and desolation H7722 shall come H935 upon thee suddenly, H6597 which thou shalt not know. H3045 Stand H5975 now with thine enchantments, H2267 and with the multitude H7230 of thy sorceries, H3785 wherein H834 thou hast laboured H3021 from thy youth; H5271 if so be thou shalt be able H3201 to profit, H3276 if so be thou mayest prevail. H6206 Thou art wearied H3811 in the multitude H7230 of thy counsels. H6098 Let now the astrologers, H1895 H8064 the stargazers, H2374 H3556 the monthly H2320 prognosticators, H3045 stand up, H5975 and save H3467 thee from these things that shall come H935 upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; H7179 the fire H784 shall burn H8313 them; they shall not deliver H5337 themselves H5315 from the power H3027 of the flame: H3852 there shall not be a coal H1513 to warm H2552 at, nor fire H217 to sit H3427 before it. Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, H3021 even thy merchants, H5503 from thy youth: H5271 they shall wander H8582 every one H376 to his quarter; H5676 none shall save H3467 thee.
How art thou fallen H5307 from heaven, H8064 O Lucifer, H1966 son H1121 of the morning! H7837 H3213 how art thou cut down H1438 to the ground, H776 which didst weaken H2522 the nations! H1471
Whither H8033 the tribes H7626 go up, H5927 the tribes H7626 of the LORD, H3050 unto the testimony H5715 of Israel, H3478 to give thanks H3034 unto the name H8034 of the LORD. H3068
There were H3426 also that said, H559 We have borrowed H3867 money H3701 for the king's H4428 tribute, H4060 and that upon our lands H7704 and vineyards. H3754

Commentary on Lamentations 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The Lamentations of Jeremiah
Chapter 1
We have here the first alphabet of this lamentation, twenty-two stanzas, in which the miseries of Jerusalem are bitterly bewailed and her present deplorable condition is aggravated by comparing it with her former prosperous state; all along, sin is acknowledged and complained of as the procuring cause of all these miseries; and God is appealed to for justice against their enemies and applied to for compassion towards them. The chapter is all of a piece, and the several remonstrances are interwoven; but here is,
Lam 1:1-11
Those that have any disposition to weep with those that weep, one would think, should scarcely be able to refrain from tears at the reading of these verses, so very pathetic are the lamentations here.
Lam 1:12-22
The complaints here are, for substance, the same with those in the foregoing part of the chapter; but in these verses the prophet, in the name of the lamenting church, does more particularly acknowledge the hand of god in these calamities, and the righteousness of his hand.
